Exceeded Expectations

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 21, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

- decent tee signs with maps, though no distances
- durable baskets that catch well
- well maintained park with some minor obstacles
- great use of water hazards with river and lagoon in play
- one basket and one tee make use of elevation on edge of park
- surprisingly fun and well designed despite small size
- decent hole length despite only having six holes

Cons:

- only six holes
- a couple of holes are ridiculously short (100 ft or less)
- natural tees
- mostly flat
- plays pretty close to other activities in multi-use park

Other Thoughts:

Stange's Park was one of those throw-in bagger courses I hit on my way back to the Chicago area. I expected it to be sort of trivial since it only had 6 holes. This course was actually surprisingly fun. Some holes are very short, but several of them have some respectable length. For such a small park, there is a surprising amount of water hazard here, which makes up for the relative openness and flatness.

The Prairie River winds through the park and also forms a lagoon. These are in play on every hole except for hole 1 in some fashion. Holes 3 and 4 throw between the two so you have water hazards on either side. Hole 5 throws across the river to an elevated basket on the hillside which is cool despite being very short. Hole 6 backtracks a bit, but once you climb up the embankment to the road, you turn around and throw downhill towards the lagoon with a basket placement right at the edge of it. This is pretty cool and totally unexpected for such a small park with no pictures coming in.

Given the course is only 6 holes, you obviously have to set expectations. For what it is, this course is actually a lot of fun and has some cool variety. The main con here is playing a bit closer to the playground area than I'd like. Otherwise, this is a fun course you can finish in 20-30 minutes solo. There are lots of courses in this part of Wisconsin, but this is not far off of the highway if you are passing through Merrill and not a bad place to stop off. Kitchenette Park just down the road has 3 more holes which play even faster.
