Across the desert and into the wilderness

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 6, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

The nine-holer at Temple Baptist Church offers a reasonable layout, especially in the middle section of the course which utilizes well the patch of woods on the property.

The Temple Trail course covers a couple of the basics with concrete teepads and decent ChainStar Pro baskets.

The designer did a good job maximizing what land they had available by including some trees on six of the nine holes on the course. The first two holes are open, which allow some warm up before requesting more accuracy with several moderately wooded holes.

The course plays entirely on grass, and even though there's woods, there is almost no rough on the course. The land is very cart friendly and the grounds are easy to walk.

The start of the course is marked with a large board with some guidelines for disc golf.

Cons:

The wooded part of Temple Trail is about 1,000 feet from the parking lot, which the designer accesses by making Hole #1 a wide-open, nearly-500-feet-long trek. At the end of the course, Hole #9 is another long and wide-open design that is followed by a similar walk back to the parking lot.

There is no signage at the teepads, which could lead to a bit of confusion in at least one spot. That navigational assistance is needed because the first basket you'll probably spot from the Hole #2 teepad is the target for Hole #3.

When I played the course last month, there was a large brush pile in the middle of the fairway for Hole #2.

If multiple groups were playing the course, there could be a logjam because the Hole #4 basket is in the line of fire for those teeing off on Holes #5 or #6.

The basket on Hole #8 had a couple broken chains when I played and there was a drainage area near Hole #9 that was dry during my round, but that might not always be the case.

The course is closed on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings during church services.

Other Thoughts:

The Temple Trail course is limited in land but the use of the wooded area is good and the design avoids any major flaws. The layout and distances are a good option for novices to intermediate players.

The course is about 10 minutes off of I-59. Just don't lose your mind with all the traffic lights between the highway and the church.

Pros:

Nice tee pads. good baskets. not crowded. good variety of distance. course flows ok. beginner friendly. not much chance of losing a disc. appears well maintained

Cons:

no signs at all. baskets have numbers but too small to see till you get close therefore navigation is not good. course doesn't have a lot of obstacles ie mostly flat and open. no amenities accept a couple of benches. long walk from 9 back to parking lot and hole 1

Other Thoughts:

This is a course next door to a big church. the church has a lot of activities so it might be possible to enter the church for water and a restroom at times but nothing like that is outside at the course. There is a sign at the beginning of the course so you know where to start but it has no map or info about the course or specific holes. There are a few nice holes but also some very bland ones. hole number 1 for example is a flat open hole with absolutely nothing in the way. They could have easily added a 10th hole to lead back from 9 to the parking lot. looked like maybe there was land to add more holes? In my opinion course could be greatly improved with some more obstacles for instance create an "island" hole where they are too open. All in all not a bad course but also nothing special. It does have potential to be better
