I Never Would Have Let My Students Out Of My Sight To Play This Course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 4, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Don't let me be misunderstood, I liked this little course a lot. Spirit Lake Is more than a putter course. I'm not sure why the information sheet said putters only. Because I'm not exactly Paul McBeth, I usually throw some kind of a mid-range or approach disc on a 180' hole. So I hope I won't get banned or something because I used more than just my putter here.

The course starts out in the open beside the tennis courts. There's a practice basket and a course map sign here. There are small but very adequate concrete tee pads and nice Prodigy baskets. The colored tee signs are nice and informative. The first holes here are open and play 180' and 166' respectfully. Next, walk across the parking lot and you'll find the # 3 tee pad tucked into the little gathering of trees. Holes 3-7 play out into the thickly wooded area and then 8 & 9 circle back? Although really short, 3-4-5-6-7 play through some really tight gaps with # 4 being a interesting 65' shot needing a really severe hyser to reach the basket.

I see that the previous reviewer, Jan Plastifari, suggested playing these wooded holes 3-9 in a continuous circuit. I think that is a most excellent suggestion.

Cons:

I agree with most of Jah's cons. The course flow is a little strained with the long walkout from 2 to 3.

I never like to see par 2's. I don't care how short the holes are, make them a par 3 and give these students some easy birdies.

The wooded holes are brush filled and losing/searching for lost discs would be a problem.

The course is not available during school hours.

I think this is a cool little course but I'm not exactly convinced it's a great course for P.E. Classes. I don't know about here in Spirit Lake but as a retired P.E. teacher, I couldn't have possibly let my students out of my sight for any amount of time. If I allowed my students to be unsupervised in these woods, they would have burned the forest down with their smoking (both cigs and weed), illicit consensual sex would be commonplace, beer, wine and whiskey bottles would litter the landscape, the baskets and signs would be vandalized and sexual assault reports would cover the principal's desk.

Other Thoughts:

This is a fun, well designed little pitch and putt. If you're in the vicinity of Spirit Lake High School, I'd recommend a round. It's a little different but definitely has it's charms.

Nice Pitch and Putt Beginners Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 15, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Excellent use of the land available.

Holes 4-9 require a good shot to score a 2, shaping a shot, hitting a gap, or both.

Concrete tee pads (approximately 2.5'x4') are nice and plenty large enough for the length of shots.

Tee signs for each hole.

Nice Prodigy baskets.

Great introductory course for school kids.

Practice basket.

Downloadable course map.

Cons:

Short holes, 124' average.

Flow issues with holes 1 and 2 located a couple hundred feet from the other 7 holes.

Holes 1 and 2 are very open compared to the other holes.

Brushy rough can hide discs.

Other Thoughts:

Most likely home to the toughest 67' hole in the world, hole 4, sharp dogleg left. (I have yet to get a "drive" closer than around12')

Playing holes 3-9 multiple times is very enjoyable. These holes flow nice and present some challenge.

Setting par at 2 for each hole on the tee signs is something I wouldn't have done for a course designed for beginning players.

A nice pitch and putt course that is definitely worth playing if you enjoy this type of course.
