Again the only tubes that need biasing are power tubes (the 6L6GC).

Brand doesn't matter, back in the hayday of tubes you would often see brands marked one thing and clearly manufactured by another company. Anything made by GE in Holland was an Amperex tube. Anything made by Amperex in the US was a GE tube. Some RCAs were GE etc etc.

Anything made today is Chinese or Russian (with the exception of some REALLY expensive US stuff).

Re: tubes swaps...yeah, that's kinda what I'm trying to do.

Re: sending tubes...I very much appreciate the offer, but I think I'm going to wait until I hear back from a guy who works with guitar amps specifically to reply to several of the questions I have in general.

As for number of tubes, it's got two big power tubes, and six smaller ones for a total of eight...6L6GC (x2), 12AT7 (x2), 12AX7A, 7025 (x3).

I'm pretty sure I need to replace any tubes with the exact same tube (Groove tubes, exact model) or else I'd need someone to open her up and rebias stuff (at least that's my understanding from reading up on all this...could be mistaken though). That's not a step I'm willing to take at this time.

Thanks again for all the help and input, Bill!

It might be a bad cap that's causing the problems in which case I'll need to take it to a tech, because I'd not even begin to know how to fix it.

Yeah, definitely not opening the chassis up...just pulling out tubes, stuff like that. No way I'm actually gonna do any real work. I don't have a multimeter, and I certainly don't have any clue either.

Thanks for the fuse hookup info, I hadn't run across those in my search!

I don't even know how to begin to read schematics...

    I'm hopeless!

I was not aware you could plug different tubes in to get different percentages of power...I agree, though, if the tube that looks "off" is just the tremolo tube, I don't think that's the source of my problems.

I've spent all afternoon on various guitar tube amp forums, trouble shooting websites, etc trying to figure this stuff out and it's giving me a massive headache (literally).

1977 Fender Silverface Pro Reverb is what I'm working with here.

I'm having one hell of a time finding a 2.5 amp/ 125 v slo blow fuse on line.

Any magical suggestions on a good fuse dealer?

Sounds like the 12ax7a is actually the "Tremolo: 12AX7 (photoresistor)," whatever that means.

    Ha! No probs!

Hmm, lower gain would mean less power/loudness, correct?

Can I just plug in a different preamp tube and expect it not to go haywire?

Good to know re: the fuses.

Thanks for taking the time/effort to answer my questions, Bill, I really appreciate it!

Another question: if I get any other brand of tube, do I need to "re-bias" the amp? I read something about that online and didn't understand it very well. Does that mean any other brand might not have exactly the same properties and something inside the chassis needs to be tweaked?
