Perfect Pairs

In the recent "Comet or Other" thread, Three Putt commented on how well the Meteor and Buzzz pair together, as well as the Comet and the Roc (KC Pro version).

Question: Which discs would you pair together in each of the following categories?

1. Putters
2. Midranges
3. Fairway Drivers
4. Distance Drivers

Put another way, if you could only use two discs in each of the above categories, what would be your "Perfect Pairs"?

Good question.

1. Putters - I putt with the Classic Warden, upshots with the Fluid Warden.
1a. Approachers - I'm adding this category as separate and distinct from putters. I have a Mirage, Star Stud, Star Aviar3, and a Harp. If I were only carrying two, it's have to be the Av3 and Stud.

2. Midranges - I only carry two: Titanium Buzzz, and the Pink Panther.

3. Fairway Drivers - tough to pick two, but probably the Star TL and the GL River.

4. Distance drivers - Star Tern for max d; then a more overstable driver for the wind.

rusch_bag 04-13-2017 09:10 AM

Putters - Wizards and Wizards
Mids - Rocs and Rocs
Fairway - Teebirds and Teebirds
Distance - Destroyers and Destroyers

Who needs pairs?

jcassidy1990 04-13-2017 09:13 AM

Scales and Wizards are a match made in heaven.

Scale covers wind, hyzers and Forehand
Wizards for everything else

Reniger 04-13-2017 09:17 AM

Logical pairings within brands;
Putters - Aviar and Gator
Mids - Roc3 and Mako3
Fairways - Teebird and Leopard
Distance - Destroyers and Shrykes

Personally;
Putters - Scale for upshots/driving/wind putts, Serpent for putting and anhyzer approach
Mids - MD3 for stable, M4 for understable
Fairway - Eagle and FD
Distance - PD for stable, TD for understable

hugheshilton 04-13-2017 09:22 AM

Putters (I'm assuming for throwing not putting): Pro Pig and XT Colt
Mids: Seasoned DX Roc and Prime Verdict
Fairways: Star TL and Star Thunderbird
Distance: Fresh Pro Destroyer and GStar Shryke (or I could easily just carry Destroyers)

wims 04-13-2017 09:43 AM

Truth - Verdict
FD - Teebird

roggenb3 04-13-2017 09:50 AM

If putters are non-putting putters, than through fairways this is actually my bag. I've been carrying 2 driving putters, only 2 mids, and only 2 fairways for the last season and a half or so. These are the pairings I have settled on.

Putters: Baseline Tank, Ultrium Jokeri
Mids: Tournament Tursas, QMS
Fairways: G* Leopard, Ultrium Respecti
Drivers: Beat champ PFN SW, Ultrium Titan

bsammons 04-13-2017 10:06 AM

Putters: proxy/envy
Midranges: truth/verdict
Fairways: Crave/Resistor
Distance drivers: Defender/Sheriff

pjhayes7 04-13-2017 10:08 AM

Throwing Putters: Judge and Rhyno
Mids: Wasp and Roc3
Fairways: Firebird and Rival
Distance: Enforcer and Tern

kuubik 04-13-2017 10:11 AM

Great pairs from MVP family:

Envy and Proxy
Crave and Inspire
Volt and Amp

Mocheez 04-13-2017 10:12 AM

1. Putters - Aviar, Tank
2. Midranges - Sentinel, Super Stinray
3. Fairway Drivers - Teebird, JLS
4. Distance Drivers - Orc, Sidewinder

VictorB 04-13-2017 10:13 AM

My pairings
Putters: crown and swan2
Mids: zero hard mace/recycled mace
Fairways: River and Convict
Distance: TP Giant and elasto Giant

best (subjectively) pairings
Putters: crown and swan2
Mids: Comet and KC Roc

It's an unconventional but I think these are all great;

Atom and Harp. The atom is the ultimate controllable chain hitter that will hold nearly any line, while the Harp does one thing really really well. Can hit any target on a hyzer.

Bard and justice I really line because they feel basically the same in the hand, the Justice is basically like the Bard OS and with the two of those I can do most any shot under 350.

The Firebird and Eagle are an amazing combo... but I think the Stag is a better version of the Eagle. So that is my pick.

Enforcer and King for distance drivers are fantastic. They feel similar and while the one hooks up pretty hard and the other is a little flippy.

Nenja 04-13-2017 10:35 AM

I'm new and try to get myself a small bag to do it all.

P&A: Nova
MID: MF Roc3 & G* Mako3
FD: Tl3 & Gold River
DD: Champ Tern or Opto Flow & Gold Bolt

River and flow/bolt should be broken in, DD will be Frost Saint untill I reach 350' distance. :)

Putt for D'oh 04-13-2017 10:37 AM

If I had to pairdown my bag to only two of each class

Envy/Proxy
Bard/Truth
Teebird/River
?Tresspass is all I have. I want to try a Sheriff maybe

Keller 04-13-2017 10:39 AM

Putters - Yeti Aviar & Rhyno
Mids - Roc & Comet
Fairway - Leopard & Eagle-X
Drivers - Sidewinder & Orc

I cold pretty much trow tese in different stages of wear for the rest of my days and be happy

GoobyPls 04-13-2017 11:08 AM

Most of my bag is setup this way already.

Putters - Yeti Aviar & Proxy
Midranges - R-Pro Roc+ & powered-down Resistor
Fairway Drivers - Volt & River
Distance Drivers - I honestly don't throw these much, but in my case it's probably Surge SS & Star Daedalus.

Mike C 04-13-2017 11:09 AM

Easy, MVP / Axiom discs share cores so they pretty much feel the same. Often have similar wings too.

1. Proxy / Envy
2. Axis / Vector
3. Crave / Resistor
4. Nitro / Octane

Each disc in the four categories feels the same as the one next to it, its one of the best things about their line-up.

Hyzer Ale 04-13-2017 11:24 AM

Putters: Pure and Jokeri (although I replaced the Pure with a Proxy recently)
Mids: Never really paired anything
Fairway: Patriot and Rival
Distance: Wraith and Giant

JOwens 04-13-2017 11:41 AM

Putter: Chief OS/ Shaman
Mid: Proxy/Relay Not mids but I use them as such more than mids.
Fairway: MF Champ teebird/ Beat DX Teebird (beat dx is nicely US) High Wind conditions Firebird/ MF Teebird
Distance: Champ Tern/ DX Destroyer

slowplastic 04-13-2017 11:55 AM

Putters: Doesn't really matter, all fly like putters + Zone or Harp
Mids: Truth/Verdict
Fairways: Teebird/Firebird
Drivers: Destroyers (just buy 2 and they'll fly completely different but feel the same)

Bonus though, is that Verdict:Teebird I feel act the same but at speed 5ish and 7...same flights as each other BH and FH but at different distance ranges so I think they pair very well together.

ThrowBot 04-13-2017 12:46 PM

Throwing putters: Zone & Serpent (this is actually a FH/BH pairing for me)
Mids: Currently Roc & Archer, not sure it's the perfect pairing tho
Fairways: Eagle X and Eagle L <----- Best. Pairing. Ever.
Distance: Star Wraith and Star Wraith. (If things get really crazy, add another Star Wraith!)

BogeyNoMore 04-13-2017 01:07 PM

Putters: APX & Challenger
Mids: Ibex & Nebula
Fairway: Leopard & Tee Bird
Distance: Unlace & Lace

Alt Distance: Crank & Boss

SonicGuy 04-13-2017 01:13 PM

Putter: Colt and Stud
Midrange: Drone and Meteor
Fairway: Teebird and Predator
Distance: Beast and Orc (or PDx if you can find one)

XC_Eddy 04-13-2017 01:19 PM

Putters: Zone and Wizard (maybe not a perfect pair, but they cover everything)
Mids: Roc and Roc
Fairway: Teebird and Leapoard (I feel good about this one)
Driver: Wraith and Sidewinder

Moonshine 04-13-2017 01:23 PM

This is actually how I like to set up my bag:
  • Putters: Shield - Harp
  • Midranges: Warship - Bard
  • Drivers: Stag - Longbowman
  • Distance Drivers: Destiny - Catapult

F. Howl 04-13-2017 01:26 PM

  • Putters: Pro line Breaker/Zone
  • Mid: Buzzz/Buzzz OS
  • Fairway: Patriot(Leopard)/Undertaker
  • Driver: Crank/Hurricane

thirtydirtybirds 04-13-2017 01:28 PM

Putters: classic Aviar/P2
Mids: beat roc/fresh roc
Fairways: JLS/Eagle
Distance: Hatchet/OLF

ILUVSMGS18 04-13-2017 01:34 PM

Putters: Rhyno/P2
Mids: Gator/McPro Roc3
Fairways: Eagle-X (or TeeBird)/FD
Drivers: PD (PDx)/CD3
Alternative Drivers: Destroyer/Tern (or a Pro/beat Destroyer)

This ^ is technically the correct answer, except OLFs instead of Orcs (Orcs are dumb).

Nonetheless, I differ:

Scale/Wiz
Fresh Roc/Beat Roc
Fresh Gazelle/Beat Gazelle
Fresh OLF/Beat OLF
Fresh Destroyer/Beat Destroyer

jeffsk 04-13-2017 02:58 PM

Current pairings that I am enjoying:

Putters: Scale and Reko (though am putting with Plutoniums)
Mids: Kaxe and Kaxe Z
Fairways: Tyrant and Laseri

Kodachrome 04-13-2017 03:02 PM

Envy/anode

Roc or wasp/comet

Teebird/leopard

Pd2/tern

If cycles are included then my answers change, but whatevs.

DiscinFiend 04-13-2017 03:45 PM

If I could only carry two molds in each category...

Driving Putters - Rhyno/Nova
Mids - Mortar/Roc
Fairway Drivers - Firebird/Teebird
Distance Drivers - Destroyer.....Destroyer

armiller 04-13-2017 04:18 PM

I like too many molds in each category to really have pairs...

Putters: Zone & Polecat (my putting putters don't need a pair... and sorry, Pure, you just got left out)
Mids: Buzzz & Drone? (the Comet has its own standalone place)
Fairways: overstable Star Teebird with a Champion Leopard (but my Z Undertaker occupies a solid spot in between, and my Firebird ain't going anywhere for a while)
Drivers: hmmm not sure I have any real pairs...
-coming in at 13 speed, my overstable Z Nuke and Z Crank have my forehand distance drives covered
-on the slower end, I have an OS Star Valkyrie (175) that pairs well with a flippy Champ Valk (172)
-in between, my ESP Surge (174) and Champion Tern (175) could be called a pair

Guess I'm still not sure what a pair is... I'm also a mold maximalist, so I love bagging only one or at the most two of one mold.

I missed the point of the OP question. Oops.

Putters: Pure, Shield
Mids: M2, M4
Fairways: Saint, Thunderbird
Drivers: D2, D4

@iDiscGolf 04-13-2017 08:56 PM

Pa1 & pa4
Truth & Verdict
Leopard & firebird
Destroyer & wraith

Honorable mention to one of my favorites which may seem odd to some. The Patriot & PD! I can run a course with those two discs and a Putter.

Nothing but cage 04-13-2017 09:05 PM

I actually have my bag set up on this method of pairing right now.

Envy/proxy
Drone/kc roc
Resistor/relay
Photon/wave

Don't get to through the mids a lot because the envy/proxy get so much distance.
