To manage that "success" with 20% circle 1 putting in the last round is pretty impressive. It's not a real impressive round, but he definitely avoided the total collapse it looked like he was heading for early in the front 9.

Just think about whats got to be going thru his mind waiting on the next tee after the birdie putt **** out the back of the basket... Probably something like...

"Man... the trolls are going to be all over me tonight."

LOL

It looks like Brodie and Dustin Keegan had a playoff for the USDGC spot and Brodie won.

brutalbrutus 05-09-2021 08:53 PM

BrotherDave will be thoroughly pleased with that result...:D

txmxer 05-09-2021 11:14 PM

Although anecdotal, one could say he played to his mean. Which continues to grow.

Good for him. More players at higher levels means more interesting tournaments.

Watching the Central Coast coverage of round 2.

He consistently had higher arm speed than Rick off the tee...which doesn’t necessarily mean anything...however...

How much older is he than Rick? Imagine if he grew up playing dg for as long as anybody in the top 10 right now.

And just because you’ve got arm speed doesn’t mean your entire game is complete. But that kinda arm speed at his age when most people have “peaked” is impressive, especially for less than 2 years of dg full time experience.

Hampstead 05-10-2021 12:50 AM

Playing highly competitive Ultimate since 2006 helps develop necessary skills. Being 6'5" helps as well.

dehaas 05-10-2021 01:09 AM

It definitely does, and what he’s missing right now is the knowledge of playing for 15 years when you’re competing in MPO at 33 when your biggest competitors have Jr Worlds titles.

His size at 33 also probably has his body feeling closer to that of a 40 year old. The lack of golf experience being a n00b is what will make him inconsistent in MPO for now.

Size and athletic ability has got him ahead of the learning curve, but he’s still way behind in the skills that will make him a consistent contender week to week. Not a knock on him, just way too many others any given week in a better position to take down one of the 1050 boyz when they can’t catch a break.

Hampstead 05-10-2021 01:13 AM

Sure. He's pretty much a 1000 rated local pro with the luxury of social media name recognition and the financial ability to go on tour.

He is both way more physically gifted and works harder at it than any local pros I know. He'll be in the 1020's soon enough. Whether he can get past that who knows?

Also, he's only been playing a couple years. His age is working against him but there's no denying he progressed much quicker than most.

flatflip 05-10-2021 09:10 PM

Is he only 33? Had him as older.

Either way, last weekend's coverage had him looking less stiff than I've seen previously. If he can get his mass working for him, he has a pretty high ceiling.

MaxFlight 05-11-2021 12:50 AM

Not sure if this has been pointed out from anyone else... But Brodie is suddenly throwing elite distances. Not just Pro, but elite. Clocking in 75-76mph drives, consistently well over 500ft.
Where the haters now?

...and its coming from a fairly short compact(for his size) motion. He's basically just muscling them out there. Just think if he ever develops a more dynamic version like Gibson or Eagle/Simon.

Though i don't think he really needs it at this point. He'd be better off just refining his current style and avoiding the stress on the elbow/knees those style can bring.

AFAIK, he's always had a healthy throwing shoulder. He's definitely got that going for him. I'm not an ultimate player but from what I garner they aren't necessarily cranking max power drives all the time, it's more of a focus on accuracy and athleticism and is generally a lot harder on the knees than the shoulder, where as disc golf is a bit of the opposite.

At 6'5 and at least 220 I'm not surprised he's a bomber and neither should you. In terms of overall physical strength, I gotta think he's one of the strongest guys on tour.

I was chuckling about that watching the coverage. One of the last videos I watched on Brodies channel he was saying he needed to work on his form and gain a bit of distance. A couple months later and now he's out driving his cardmates on most par 4-5's

glassila 05-11-2021 12:14 PM

My Brodie Smith popularity breakdown:
2-3% of disc golfers love everything about him (fan boys).
30% definitely like Brodie, but he's not their favorite player.
40% don't care one way or the other.
20% don't like Brodie.
5-7% Brodie is Hitler (haters).

I'm in the 30% group. When he first came on the scene I liked him, then I didn't care one way or the other, but lately he's moved back into the "like" group.

Jay Dub 05-11-2021 12:17 PM

I have never seen anyone type "I hate Brodie".

I have seen many say, "All the haters".

brutalbrutus 05-11-2021 12:19 PM

I wonder how many of the 20% that don't like him are the DGers that just don't like anyone that finds the game?...

You know the ones... The "New people are clogging up my home course" crowd

... and he's bringing new people into the game. :D

Most people are too passive aggressive to just come right out and say "I hate Brodie" but there are plenty out there. I bet there would have been hundreds/thousands of them laughing and giving out "I told you so's" had Sundays round been on Youtube.

Plenty out there on Instagram. Pretty much an DG humor/meme pages following is full of em

BryanC 05-11-2021 12:44 PM

I have not seen anything on DGCR that I would call hating on Brodie. Some people clearly are not fans of his, but that is far from hating him. I think some people use the word "hate" or "hater" differently than me though, so some of the people who are in the 2-3% or even the 30% categories above may be calling people who are in the 20% category "haters".

The people in the "love everything about him" crowd tend to label everybody in the last three categories you outlined as "the haters."

would people that think he shouldn't throw rollers into a playground area fit into the 20% or the 5-7% group?

Am I a hater that I thought he was a reckless careless ignorant dbag for that video and how it went down?

If so, than sure. I'm curious where I fit in these percentages too.

It depends.

I think I saw at least half a dozen pros throw it and almost hit people and laugh about it in their YouTube content right after that. Heck, Tristan Tanner's injury saved the facial structures of park goers everywhere. If you justify that as why you dislike Brodie, but give the others a pass, then you might be a "hater".

This has some merit, but there is some amount of justification for disliking Brodie, and giving others a pass, simply based on the fact that MILLONS of people see what Brodie does, and 7,500 people see what Tristan does.

With great power comes great responsibility and all that.

How about McBeth?

After paying a bit more attention after the Brodie incident, I basically decided that there are 2 kinds of pro disc golfers: pro disc golfers that throw into people on YouTube and pro disc golfers that don't do YouTube content.

Chains Bailey 05-11-2021 05:21 PM

I think there is an equal distribution of the use of "Haters" and "Fanboys".

Brodie defines who the haters are, its pretty much anyone who has ever disagreed with him or snickered at or liked a comment/meme criticizing him or making fun of him. I was a curious observer when he came on, I am a hater by his definition so Eff him. I'll be a hater. I would ignore him but he makes that difficult. The only reason I'm here is stuff pops up on social media about him. He's once again criticizing ratings while selling his 1000 rated zones.

brutalbrutus 05-11-2021 05:28 PM

That's your fault for paying attention to social media. Life is much more enjoyable without FB IG and Twitter.

Too true. Just a lot of DG talk locally occurs on FB. Then I get linked to Twitter and spiral of doom from there...

IG is somewhat tolerable if you curate what you follow. Twitter and FB are dumpster fires and I’ve been logged out of both for the last 3 months and I don’t know that I’ll ever go back. You’re right that a lot of the local DG stuff is on FB tho

brutalbrutus 05-11-2021 05:35 PM

Never had an account for any of them. I had a Myspace account once upon a time but the only reason i had it was to play Zynga poker lol
