The Toboggan Course. Almost nothing else needs to be said. This course has been thrilling players and fans for decades. The Discraft Great Lakes Open, in its 38th year, is one of our sport’s most storied events. It was one of the first National Tour events and has been a PDGA NT a half dozen times.

We are very proud to bring a Pro Tour stop to the disc golf hotbed that is Michigan. Discraft brings amazing support to tour stops and we can all be confident that the 2018 DGLO will be no different. The tremendous terrain of the Toboggan Course combined with the water parks, trails, and local activities make this a can’t miss event.

The course is only open for a few months each year, and it will be setup in Pro Tour tournament mode for just one week of those few months. If you are looking to play and/or watch one of the country’s best courses while it is setup for the world’s best players, Milford, Michigan is the place to be in early July. See you there!

Tobo is in fantastic shape this year. I'm really looking forward to coverage. No Paige or Cat, so FPO seems pretty wide open.

lyleoross 06-25-2018 01:28 PM

I remember watching Tobo rounds years ago. It is a phenomenal course for me because of those memories.

^Indeed. In pretty much every way, Park Mgt was simply more accommodating about the course than it has been in recent history; in terms of mowing where the TD suggested, trimming/clearing, length of time course is available. They really want to feature the course as a selling point, rather than pulling the baskets ASAP.

This should be fun event to watch. I think I want to spend a day spotting for this event... mostly because it's the best way to spectate. I just can't handle spotting on 3 anymore... hunting down discs on that hole can really wear you out. Humping it over the berms on either side of the fairway can wipe you out as much as slogging up and down the hill does.

Hopefully, I can get #8 or #12, maybe even #15... #6 would be fun, too.

BogeyNoMore 06-26-2018 07:56 PM

Told my son he might want to catch some of this.

He said he's seen tournaments on Toboggan. I told him, "Yeah, but those cats Sharpied their names on their discs. They weren't stamped on at the factory."

I remember taking my brother in law to his first NT to spectate, and on the ride home he looks at me shaking his head and says "They can throw a putter farther than I can my Wraith." Seeing it in person really hammers home the skills our sports best posses.

Ricky is conspicuously absent. Has he been back since he got his a** handed to him here by Wiggins as an Am?

No, It looks like most of the top Tier pros are skipping this event. You can see the list on the link above.

He's probably just gonna enjoy his latest win..

brutalbrutus 06-27-2018 02:16 AM

He's in Finland this week and then Sweden next week...

https://www.pdga.com/tour/event/34715

A few of the guys went to Europe early. Konapiste is the week after GLO. Though to be honest I am not sure which guys are actually over there. There are a few that are signed up for multiple events before and after Konapiste.

brutalbrutus 06-27-2018 02:26 AM

Devan Owens is signed up for GLO and the Sweden event. Owens, Koling and Ricky are all signed up for Idlewild and an event in Sweden the same weekend.

Jolt 06-27-2018 04:26 AM

Hard to play i Ale Sweden and Idewild at the same time. . .but as a Swed i hope Ricky and Simon stays to play Ale, lots of os in the club that going to play Ale just for a chance to se the pros

Jolt 06-27-2018 04:32 AM

Looks like many pros are going to stay in Sweden for some time, Skellefteå Open is a fun course but way north i Sweden..more north than i ever been

Flick Maniac 06-27-2018 07:56 AM

Ricky, Gregg, Philo, Paige etc are in Finland atm for Tyyni which is kind of GBO inspired mega event Euro style.

Wysocki won the Great Lakes Open in 2013, in the Pro division, against all the best players in the world. Second place was Garrett Gurthie, 9 strokes back.

A simple search showed this.

Myke566 06-27-2018 09:26 AM

Kinda bummed to see so many top pros skip this event. Compared to the somewhat boring Utah Open course, Toboggan is truly a gem. I would have loved to have seen Eagle and Simon play Toboggan. I'm just glad Paul is playing.

Meh, it's just Simon, Eagle and Ricky...the field still looks strong.

Jolt 06-27-2018 09:55 AM

FPO is very open ( lol ) with Cat and Paige missing. . fun to see Ragna in a big event again, maybe she can even win this?

Had a chance to chat with Ragna when she was in town a few years back. She wasn't a fan of the Toboggan because it has "too many blind holes." :\
... but apparently, she's coming back for more.

I don't know how you'd design a championship caliber course that doesnt involve quite a few blind holes - to make you hit a window, and really shape and hold a line over a distance. Who wants a bunch of 400+ ft holes that are minor variations on straight shots through a bunch of trees?

Future_Primitive 06-27-2018 11:59 AM

Hopefully she has had time to play it a few times with it being in longer this year. The course is in excellent shape and looks like it would be a great place for Pros to play. Personally in my Top 5 courses that I have ever played (out of 120) and I hope they leave it open for a month or more next year too so I can go back again. Very much looking forward to this event and cant wait to watch the Pros play it.

TimSyl 06-27-2018 12:15 PM

With PP, CA, and VJ all not there I would guess Ragna is almost assured of a top 3 finish, and wouldn't be shocked if she wins. It will probably be either Ragna, Weese, or Bjerkaas.

Sarah Hokom will be there too, unless something's come up.

I'm sure it's changed a bit in the 12+ years since I last played Toboggan, but I don't recall a lot of blind holes. I recall multi-shot holes (particularly for the FPO skill set) where the basket wasn't necessarily visible from the tee but I wouldn't call those "blind" holes. Seems like an odd criticism of a course, especially one that is sure to be well staffed with spotters to alleviate any concern about losing discs in "blind" spots.

I think this is pretty accurate. Most of the holes, not visible from the tee pad, are multi shot. Hitting a landing zone is at a premium on many holes here.

It indeed has gone through a lot of changes, JC. A handful of years ago they pulled out all of the invasive Russian Olive bushes and really opened up the course. BUT.....now the native underbrush and shule is grown in very well. They have moved a couple tee pads, lengthened a couple holes and move a pin or two. They really carved out some ancillary paths to next tees, improved the tee pads considerably this year as well. It should be a nice test for the pros and some fantastic video.

Yep, missed that. So, one of the four have a chance to win.

I thought that the Doss's were signed up. Might be mistaken, or their plans perhaps changed.

brutalbrutus 06-27-2018 05:27 PM

They were signed up. I had to recheck when he posted Doss wasn't going to be there.

Surprised Nat Doss is missing this event, his disc sponsor is in Michigan. Others not so much like Rick, Eagle, Simon all have the company they are sponsored by in Sweden/Scandinavia with headquarters for Discmania and more for Latitude 64. Now with those players it makes sense for them to be over near the factories and or company design/headquarters for company. Nate Doss it seems odd. A bit for the Innova players too but the Innova players might have decided to play the Swedish events over one sponsored by rival company Discraft, same for Discmania players with Innova being the parent company. Paul McBeth may have decided to skip the Europe play due to being able to clean house at Tobogan course and win the PT event with a number of the top players gone, then fly over to do the Konapiste Open and have to get ready faster then those who have been in Europe for a week before and get ready in 5-6 days for Konapiste Open.

Now Females have a chance to win and since Page Pierce and Cat winning all the PT and NT events being the current female versions of Ken Climo.

ship 06-28-2018 11:12 AM

I bummed that Doss won't be at this event as well. Part of it is that I just like watching him play, but part of that was a hope that Bevel would be teaming up with Michigan brewery to make a beer for the event. Michigan would've been a perfect place for that kind of project.

Hokom will win by multiple strokes prolly. IMO, the course is pretty lefty/rhfh friendly. And she bombs.

A couple of these names are next on the wait list... Hopefully they'll get in

brutalbrutus 06-29-2018 06:04 PM

Devan Owens is in Finland, so at least one off the waitlist should get in. In fact, if any of the media members see this post, they need to tell him, Jerm and Ricky to get their names off the event lists they aren't going to be playing in the next few weeks...

brutalbrutus 06-30-2018 11:14 PM

Not sure what's going on but they never posted the fan vote info...

Dana 07-02-2018 10:32 AM

Fan vote is live.

And Madison has been playing some great golf this year. She almost caught Sarah at Majestic this last weekend! I'd call her a contender at DGLO.

Discraft’s Great Lakes Open is the place to be this weekend. If you cannot make it out to the event, make plans to watch live starting at 2 PM ET for shot-by-shot FPO coverage and 3:15 PM ET for live MPO coverage.
Looks like they're going to keep this format going...

I'll be pulling for the Motor City Chain Gang's own: Krystal Fromm.
To know her, is to like her.

Meulen 07-05-2018 02:11 PM

We (wife and I) will be at Kensington tomorrow to watch in person. Planning to follow the lead card in the afternoon, but will likely just pick a hole and watch all the cards come through in the late morning / early afternoon. Any suggestions on a hole that is great for spectator viewing?
