I can’t say for certain, but been playing a while myself and read the Dave D thread on the old PDGA forum religiously. He talked a lot about weighting agents, I would guess that the plastic used back then was maybe a lower density and a weighting agent was added to achieve heavier discs?
So now it’s a more dense plastic and negatives are used to bring weight down instead of vice versa. Old 150 class plastic was always super gummy also, weighting agent stiffened it up a bit for heavier weights?
Disc design itself comes into play also, wider rimmed discs have more mass along the outer edge. So do sales numbers, for a long time manufacturers claimed that light weight discs just don’t sell. I think that’s shifted somewhat in more recent years, but lighter weight stuff is still a minority.
