I find it interesting that everyone assumes he will be a top player. Does that mean any athlete on a semi-pro level could come to disc golf, put their time in, and be a top player? Maybe that is true of a lot of sports.

I know he did ultimate and that is throwing discs, but other ultimate players seem to not necessarily make the transition all the time.

But for your question....hmmm, shortened season, new this year and at least on videos making choices that I even know are not the best option...your June 2021 for overall rating seems reasonable. Heíll probably have 1000 rated rounds this year though.

What you're asking depends a lot on the specifics of the athletic movements in those other sports... Brodie, however, didn't just come from another sport. He came from another DISC sport, and one where he was at least in the conversation at one point for the title of best player in the world. That implies a HUGE inherent skill and comfort with discs coming into disc golf, as well as a monstrous demonstrated work ethic.

riltim 06-23-2020 04:56 PM

He must be doing something right with the fan base if the "Blame the tick!" tank-tops are sold out in all but small and medium at $22 a pop. You'd have to be a pretty big fan to buy a shirt with such an obscure reference.

He can't shut the f$&k up for more than 30 seconds, he's 32 and acts like a 16 year old.
He fits in with the obnoxious Eric Oakley and AJ Risley load mouth attention seeking fan fad, he's the bomb for a while and next year no one cares anymore.
We'll see. I gave him a chance and the more I see of him, the more annoyed I am.
Best of luck to him, but he's not selling me on any of the dark horse kool-aid gibberish.

lol.. Oakley and Risely.... Brodie is and always will be an entertainer 1st, pro athlete 2nd. But sure....I think he's fine with being an average pro golfer, but at the same time he's an above average entrepreneur building revenue streams from his original content, making deals with Discraft, Foundation and others. If you followed him for a few years like I have, he knows he's 30+, knows he needs to latch onto $omething $table long term. At this point I believe HE thinks he has found it with disc golf. Personality wise... I think he is extremely good for the sport, dude knows where the market is (growing new players) and how to appeal to them.

Do any of guys have a Discord account or follow him on twitter? If so, ask him if his rounds are going to be filmed this weekend.

I wish I could have a longtime seasoned pro like Philo dissect my game and point out mistakes over a produced round like that.

foreputt 06-24-2020 10:17 AM

I think he'll get to 1000 this year no problem. It's basically a distance thing on most courses and he seems to have it. Going from 960 to 1000 is much easier than 1000 to 1040.

Agreed, however Risley has been around the game and Pros for practically his entire life, so if he is still rounding that badly now, I don't see it changing just because Philo pointed it out. He doesn't have a forehand either, so if Philo were to point that out too, would he suddenly be able to develop one?

As for the decision making, I commented on a youtube video he was in last year, about him running silly putts and getting punished for it. Well he responded super aggressive that he will ALWAYS continue to run those putts, no matter what any one says. :\

Looks like they sold out that $500/month Patreon in a week

brutalbrutus 06-24-2020 02:37 PM

Paul is a machine, lol... He was maybe a combined 2ft from shooting -10 on the front9:eek:

foreputt 06-24-2020 02:39 PM

I didn't know there was this much money in disc golf. But if they want to give it to you you might as well take it.

Jolt 06-25-2020 02:39 AM

Odd time for Brodie to join Foundation and making it Discraft exlucive. . .basicly everything is sold out
Hard to run a business when you donīt have anything to sell

I wonder how long it will take for Discraft to catch up, SOO many moulds that are sold out everywhere

wolfhaley 06-25-2020 07:34 AM

I didn't realize they were going Discraft only. Now that seems like an odd decision but what do I know. I'll stick with infinite and marshall street.

Paul's goal is to build his "brand" first.
That is why he went to Discraft.
He is using his brand to build business for his store.
And using the store to sell his brand.
In that regard, selling other company's merchandise is inconsistent with his goals.

That's pretty cool that he at least responded. One of the best things about our sport is how accessible our pros still are. This won't be the case pretty soon as our sport explodes in popularity. Go tweet at any NBA player and see if you get a response. You won't.

I was really into Brodie doing the disc golf thing, but man, this off-season has just left a sour taste in my mouth. Selling so many discs with his name on it and he hasn't done **** in an actual round of disc golf. I know I just sound salty that he's selling discs and shirts.....it just seems so.....****ing corny. But he is popular, so make that $$ i guess.

Its weird though. Paul seems to be using Brodie to build his brand and be the charismatic one and Brodie is using Paul to give himself legitimacy and using him like a coach. Interesting dynamic.

I think they both realized they can help each other. It's been an interesting few years. The "older" players like Paul, Simon, Ricky (27-30), Brodie (32) all imop have started thinking about life after touring disc golf, so they are attempting to build long term revenue opportunities. Foundation sounds like a stepping stone for both Paul and Brodie. Long term I think it would be a huge mistake for Paul not to build a brand off his own name, but then again...someone already did....

"this off-season has just left a sour taste in my mouth." I agree there seems to be a sense of urgency with Brodie regarding merch sales. But then again...he comes from a different mindset than 99% of the other players. Dude can retail.

brutalbrutus 06-26-2020 02:04 PM

He was -4 thru 11 but bogeys on last 3 holes. -1 thru 14

Jolt 06-26-2020 02:12 PM

He is a good putter, but to much OB today.....kind of hard to practice roped OB

Cgkdisc 06-26-2020 02:15 PM

He's outpacing his card mates pretty well so far.

How much would you expect the ratings to change throughout the day? With the rounds complete so far, if he finishes at -1 it would be something in the 1020s...

brutalbrutus 06-26-2020 02:20 PM

Got the bird on 16 after a par on 15

brutalbrutus 06-26-2020 02:50 PM

Bogey bogey finish to shoot even.

Partly depends on how or if the wind changes but I'm thinking Even par may come in around 1010 by day end.

Normally the ratings will drop as the day progresses because later cards are already known to play the course better regardless of their rating. However, since this was the first round, the groups are supposed to be randomized other than maybe the feature card. So as long as the weather is approximately the same over the day, the ratings posted by the first half of the field should remain the same as the second half passing through. Now that players are shuffled into score progression, tomorrow we could see the ratings in the first half, gradually decline as the day progresses. At least that's the normal pattern.

Nice snowman on the first hole, lol.

He did fight back with a bird on #2 though

It doesn't seem corny, it is corny. It's all possible because of young gullible souls.

brutalbrutus 06-27-2020 03:39 PM

Riding the struggle bus in the middle of the round.

Thavoc 06-27-2020 03:51 PM

Struggling a bit in round two, but to be fair its his second tournament and consistency is something that comes with time and experience. Hes already shown he can play at a higher level than 99% of us. He seems to enjoy the game and the other pros seem to like him. Not to mention he has already brought in a ton of new players, his discord is full of new players asking for advice. So in all honesty I have nothing but love for the guy, he is a good thing for the sport whether you old farts will admit it or not.

I used to really like brodie smith when I knew him from trick shot videos and the amazing race. I still kinda like him but his hyper commercialization is off putting to me. very cool he's able to do it and make it work for him though! and other than that I like the guy

I'm really really impressed by his putting, but not so much with the other parts of his game. I think it might be hard for him to really smooth his form out once the season picks up if he is playing a lot (idk how much he is playing) but I think eventually if he can really transition to a smoother throw he could be a very solid player. he's definitely already capable of throwing some really nice shots with good distance

WeatherWimp 06-27-2020 05:09 PM

Brodie is dropping out of the tournament, apparently the Lyme disease is rearing it’s ugly head as he said it got “scary out there” during round 2.

Some may see it as an excuse, but the commentators keep talking about how Ricky Wysocki feels and Ricky said he wasn’t ready at Waco and his Lyme disease was last October? No clue how big of a deal that illness is but I certainly don’t want it.

perklc 06-27-2020 05:42 PM

I don't think he really needs an excuse. He was averaging like 990 in just his second tournament so it's not like he was playing poorly.

brutalbrutus 06-27-2020 05:53 PM

Its very humid out there today with the wind being down. Probably sapped the energy right out of him..
