Brodie Smith PDGA #128378
https://www.pdga.com/player/128378
https://twitter.com/Brodiesmith21 https://www.youtube.com/user/brodiesmith21 Video of his current drive/form: https://twitter.com/Brodiesmith21/st...27976979607552 Hard to tell if he's in it for the short or long term. But it appears he is taking the game somewhat serious as he documents the journey to his first PDGA tournament. Any predictions on how well he will do? His Ultimate background should suit the short game (mid ranges, putters) well, but I think his biggest hurdle will be getting 400+ distance with drivers. |
Imagine being on his card at a tournament and he is just as loud as he was with Simon and Paul. Would be so much fun.

Maby fun to watch, but to be on that card trying to play your game..not so fun |
Being sarcastic gentlemen. I couldn't watch more than a couple minutes of that video.
|
BUT he might bring his camera crew and you'd get half a million views of you playing in that group
|
Exactly what I don't want.

If he really committed to it, he could be pretty good. Is he committed to being pretty good or is this just for YouTube views? There is a local here in Madison who recently transitioned away from being a world-class ultimate player to competitive disc golf. Until about five years ago, he just played casually with a putter and mid-range. He is now over a 1000 rated. I believe he was the runner-up for the 2019 PDGA rookie of the year.

Andrew Fish is a former high level ultimate player and now likely one of the best players in the world that has a full time job. He won 2 A tiers this year and won 10000+ all while having a full time job. Do I think Brodie will ever reach that level? Probably not, but I guess it’s not inconceivable

Ultimately, growth means more courses. Bring on his 2.something million subscribers, and before I'm too old every small town in America is going to have at least a 9-holer like they do basketball and tennis courts and softball fields and super expensive playground equipment. 18 baskets and cement tees is about the cost of one tennis court but can service up to 72 for recreation all at once. (Yes, I've given the pitch to parks departments!)
The old days sucked in comparison. The camaraderie and Happy Hippie Frisbee Family aspect was indeed great, and I want that to continue, but having to take a day trip just for the chance to play a different course that would have, at best, Mach III baskets with a Gazelle or Cyclone being the best driver seems like a distant memory now. It was cool to have been there during that toddler stage of the sport, but I'm glad I don't have to explain what it is every time it comes up in conversation anymore, and there are like a dozen courses near me when there used to be one. I'm all in on the Brodie thing, and I like his enthusiasm. Bring on the growth! |

ive played so many crappy 9 hole city park model courses in small towns quantity vs quality crowded courses can suck to play so be careful what you wish for |
I'd like to think ultimately it would lead to more quality courses too. We have way, way, way more quality courses now than we did a quarter century ago. And to alleviate crowded courses, you need more of them. People from my area who are my age can remember Brewer Park being unplayable after 12:00 noon due to the groups of 14 carrying an Eclipse in one hand and a liquor bottle cocooned in a paper bag with the other hand. It was one of three courses in a county with 750,000 or so.
I drool at the thought of private courses becoming economically viable and widespread. Critical mass for this is probably closer than we realize! |
There's a new small 9-holer near me just put in a month ago. It's fabulous for my 10-year-old. We've gotta have these kinds of courses too so the next generation of serious player can get started.

TL;DR: from my experience more popularity = a better time for disc golfers |

Actually make that >90 in a 50 mi radius per the DGCR database. That's insane

EDIT: I find Brodie unbearable - hopefully he learns some etiquette as he is playing PDGA events... |
I'm curious how seriously he's taking this too. I can't imagine he's planning an MPO career and suspect his YouTube business is the reason for this.
At the same time, I suspect he'll be a low level MPO player without all that much work if he desires, and certainly could hit 1000 rated with some time commitment. I'll bet he can hit the 400' mark both forehand and backhand within a month of starting to work with disc golf discs. He's got some decent form already though it needs some DG tweaking. |
Brodie could really bring some attention to disc golf if he did videos with celebrity casuals who play. Stay in his lane, so to speak.

My prediction... He will beat Lloyd Weema.

It's a pretty good hotbed for DG. Dayton and Cincy both have thriving scenes and Columbus isn't far away and they also have pretty good DG. |

Does he have "Leverage" enough to court a sponsor and would they be responsive?
Any chance media companies immediately ask him to be on Feature' cards for first rounds? Will he join DGCR and Bro' it up? If he finishes an event with a strong field (NT or DGPT) in the top ten, will DGCR implode? Finish this card - B Smith, J Anthon, B Williams _________? |

Not a fan of his style or videos, but when I think strictly on business lines, why would a disc golf media company not want to dip in the pool of another 2 million viewers? |

Another benefit of having the beginner 9 hole and intermediate level 18 is that when they installed a third course at the park down the road they were about to make it a longer and harder course because they didn't need to make it beginner friendly. |

yep. nope. yep. Nikko |

Wake me up when he's really about dg and the culture, right now people who post sponsorship announcements on facebook for street team "sponsorships" are more legit in my eyes. This dude just wants to exploit us for his ad revenue checks. |

If someone can attempt to exploit DG for ad revenue...
...does that mean we finally made it?:D:| |

His overall views, subscribers in his main channel has been trending downward (his ultimate videos peaked a few years ago) he's tried a group trick shot thing that didn't pan out, his newer ball golf channel is a work in progress. For those that don't know, he's been throwing discs for a while now. I think this video is one of his earliest documented disc golf throws. It's close to 8 years old now. But he does manage to bust out a destroyer to around 250ft. ;) |

I'm an old fart but I don't even know who this dude is. Youtube is only for disc golf and music videos, isn't it? |
I like Brodie.
I hope he does well. I hope he enjoys what he’s doing. I hope that he gets more people involved in disc golf. Now if he could just get the Dude Perfect guys to participate, too, that would be excellent! |

The guy is huge (6'5") and been launching lids his entire life. |
Here's a novel idea: why don't we wait and see how it turns out before trying to assume his motivation for doing this? I find him kind of annoying on his videos but I'm also willing to wait and see what happens with him before judging this whole venture.
