I guess it is Zappa, well I'll be a dancin' fool. I still say he looks angry, like he's telling some millennial to get off his lawn.

All of his vids views are down. Most of his vids (non disc golf content) get around 1-200k views a month, not bad..but far from his peak a few years ago. His wedding video from a month ago only has around 110k views.

DiscFifty 02-03-2020 10:26 AM

Plot twist.. he's already signed up as am, so Brodie vlogs his quest to becoming an am world champ. Thoughts?

Practice round with Paul and Hannah. Brodie ties with Hannah, and only throws standstill off the tee. Paul, in a walking boot and only throwing forehands, easily wins.

Yeah...
Interesting video.
I believe that it's a few weeks old.
Brodie has a lot of work to do if he wants to compete seriously, but with Paul coaching him and his natural athletic abilities, who knows what he can accomplish.
And no, I do not believe he will be 1000-rated in his first year.

A little off-topic,
Hannah's throw looks a lot better, compared to last year. It's obvious that she's putting in the work. Distance could be better but most throws were on a good line.

Paul's forehand is getting some serious reps

dmadill001 02-04-2020 08:01 AM

If I recall correctly, Hannah is around 920 rated, and Brodie tied her. Not sure if they were counting the mulligans or not (I think they probably scored from their first shots), but if not, that gives a baseline for Brodie's rating. As said earlier, that was also with Hannah looking better than last time we saw her throw. Also, Brodie was less than a month into his DG career at the time of filming this, not even using a full run up.

I think it's safe to say he'll have a shot at reaching 950 fairly easily sometime this season. 1000 takes a level of consistency I don't think he'll have yet, but maybe next year.

aphilso1 02-04-2020 09:42 AM

I was surprised that Brodie and Hannah tied. Hannah looked like she was throwing much better, and she canned a few big putts. Not sure how Brodie finished under par to tie her.

^^^ I think H went bogie, B went birdie on the last hole?

Everyone's entitled to his or her (hir) opinion.

Even when it's wrong.

:D

Try the Sheik Yerbouti album, and listen all the way through. If you can't find something you enjoy, then your ears are malfunctioning.

I kid, but...dang. Zappa is a National Treasure. A man who detested lyrics in his music, but recognized the need for them in popular music, if only to be thought of as 'normal' songs.

"What's that? Yer Jewish? Oh. Love yer nails." FZ

That's a pretty fair assumption and what I was thinking too. He's going to be competitive in Am1 right out of the gate which in all fairness is still pretty impressive for someone whose basically a newb.

I'd assume if that's the case he'll be at Am Nats on the Tobog in Michigan given it's a big Discraft sponsored event.

Paul milking the pro side, Brodie the am side. Sounds like a legit strategy for Discraft.

I still don't buy it. The recent videos don't even show me someone who will be competitive in Am1 at local C-tiers. He looks like a run of the mill Am2 player right now.

He can throw reasonably far from a standstill and has a good clean putting motion. He is still throwing occasional random WTF Richard drives. He appears to still be learning the ropes when it comes to shot selection and strategy. He needs to get a lot of competitive DG under his belt quickly. My guess is that it will be unsanctioned, Discraft-sponsored events for a while so he doesn't get a crummy rating on paper.

Hampstead 02-04-2020 02:23 PM

By the end of the year Brodie will have at least a dozen Ace Race wins.

Yeah, I get that. But Brodie sure looked like he was playing bogie golf through much of that video. So I guess what I should have said is "I don't know how Brodie was even par through 17 holes."

How many holes did they even show? Couldn't have been more than 8 or 9...

Actually, I went back and skipped thru it and they did show all the teeshots. It didn't feel like they did watching it the first time. They did cut a lot of approaches and putts though. But it's not like it was a difficult course and he did seem to have several birdies.

Next generation should have built in gimbals, at that point game over for gopro, etc.

Ehh, maybe for everyday people but gopros will stall have a place. How many people are going to strap an iPhone to a surfboard or their helmet when they go skydiving?

Yeah they showed all 20 holes on the course. Having played that course quite a bit, I wasn't that surprised that Brodie was even par. I thought he was +2 or +3 going into the final hole, but the course is really forgiving and hard to get into too much trouble. I also think they skipped all of his birdies except one.

I actually wonder if some of this might be a little gamesmanship. Of course we only see what they put in the videos.

Maybe we are seeing his best. But maybe we're not???

Those shots are the question mark. He's going straight into CONSTANT practice, that can make a big difference fast. I can see him starting the year with a lot of 920s and sneaking in some 1000s, and by the end of the year looking like a 990 player often throwing lots of rounds in that 980-1000 range, but mixing in the occasional sub-950.

I can see it playing out.... The early season keeps him from 1000, and likely ending the year an underrated 950-980 depending on the way he opens.

He comes from a disc background. And he's getting more productive and guided reps than any of the players we have probably ever met who got great seemingly overnight.

JMONEY 02-04-2020 11:54 PM

Brodie is leaps and bounds ahead of most disc golf beginners he just picked out his bag of discs and is throwing even par? He has the athleticism, competitiveness and stature to be great.

Alobar 02-05-2020 12:30 AM

Is Andrew Fish still with Discraft?

They should throw him into the mix in the McBeth/Brodie vids, since he also has an Ultimate background...

This is basically what I think, too.

He did the "10/10 from 33 feet" putt challenge in just 3 attempts . . thats good.

I have been playing for +20y and to make 10 i a row from C1 edge is NOT as easy as it might sound

Yes.

I don't see him taking time off his day job for this adventure. Sounds like a cut in pay to me.

warmuth 02-05-2020 11:26 AM

Fish should be in everyone’s videos just because his throwing style is so amazingly smooth and effortless looking. Watching him out drive card mates while looking like he’s throwing an upshot never gets old.

Not quite the same as that, but in Clearwater, FL we have Disc Golf in the Ballpark on Wednesday nights in the spring and fall. It's organized by a local disc golf store (Local Route), and we play in Spectrum Field, which is the Philadelphia Phillies Spring Training stadium. The course includes a few throws from the bleachers down onto the field, and also goes through the practice fields outside the stadium. They have a tiki bar and live music too. It's worth checking out if you're ever in the Clearwater area when it is happening.
