Noobie Question Thread (Dumb Questions answered here)

Do you have a noobie question, maybe a dumb question that you feel will get you ridiculed for asking? Well ask it here and fear not the wrath of your betters.

example questions:

What are the different rocs?

They are (from most to least stable):
Rancho
San Marino
Ontario

What do people mean 10x or 11x?

That is the amount of times that Ken Climo won worlds at the time of the disc stamping. He has a line of discs called KC Pro discs that have his stamp on it. The way people identify them is by the world championship times stamped on the disc.

I throw a lot of Innova, What plastics compare to Innova's plastic?

Star: Discraft ESP (and FLX), Lat 64 Goldline, Mill Sirius

Champion: Discraft Z, Lat 64 Opto, Mill Quantum, Gateway E or HPP

Pro: Discraft X (elite X), Mill base plastic

DX: Discraft Pro-D, Gateway S

I throw my boss about 300', what should I try next?

BAD! Bad Noob! Stop throwing any driver whose speed is in the double digits. No I don't care how accurate/good you are with it. You are not as good as you think with it.

So ask away.

i thought you were going to word this in a really mean way, but you did it about as nice as you could

optidiscic 12-18-2010 09:23 PM

This would be awesome if you and your disciples were really to take it seriously because you really could benefit a lot of people with your knowledge.

Thank you for the example question Loki. No, no you should not.

toothyfish 12-18-2010 09:24 PM

It really is a good idea. Maybe an expansion of the FAQs is the right idea.

Why can I only throw my 175g champ boss 130 ft?

agent_peebody 12-18-2010 09:30 PM

what is a bead?

Frank Delicious 12-18-2010 09:30 PM

Loki for OAT has been discussed many times in the technique section of the forum. Check out over there for an in-depth description of what OAT is, what causes it, and how to fix it.

You do not have the arm speed or snap to throw a wide rimmed driver yet.

ArcheType 12-18-2010 09:34 PM

What's better, Roc or Buzzz?

a bead is a molded part of the disc on the bottom of the disc that slows a disc down and makes it more stable. For an example of a bead vs no bead check out a rancho roc versus a buzzz. The roc has a bead and the buzzz does not.

The Groove has the best numbers of any Innova disc, are people just not ready for the groove?

agent_peebody 12-18-2010 09:35 PM

thanks Dr. Frank!

My buddy jump putts inside the circle, and I keep telling him that he can't do that. Who's right?

This depends on what you like in a midrange. The roc is slower and more stable and does better in base plastic. Buzzzes are better in premium plastic and faster and straighter out of the box. You should test out both and see which one fits your style better.

Other mids you should try:

Comet, Core, Fuse, Element, Warrior, QMS, Wasp, Hornet, Sentinel

Noill 12-18-2010 09:37 PM

why do my discs always go right?

Noill 12-18-2010 09:38 PM

Why is apothecary banned? What is an infraction?

ArcheType 12-18-2010 09:39 PM

Ya know Frank, that's the best response I've ever heard to the roc v buzzz question,

In honor of that, I'll stop trying to derail your thread. G'day Frank.

eegor 12-18-2010 09:39 PM

C'mon man! Let Dr. Frank be serious on this! This is indeed a VERY useful thread if used properly.

You are right. from inside 10 meters the person must stay behind their disc/marker and demonstrate balance.

from the PDGA rules manual

Quote:

803.04
C. Any throw from within 10 meters or less, as measured from the rear of the marker disc
to the base of the hole, is considered a putt. A follow-through after a putt that causes the
thrower to make any supporting point contact closer to the hole than the rear edge of the
marker disc constitutes a falling putt and is considered a stance violation . The player must demonstrate full
control of balance before advancing toward the hole.

Are you left handed? Right handed? Do you throw forehand or backhand?

The first is a question for the mods so you could PM one of them or hope they stop by to explain it.

An infraction is a point that counts against you when you break the rules. When you get 5 you get banned for a certain amount of time.

"skins" or match play is a way of playing disc golf where people to compete to win a hole. Each hole counts as one skin. The person with the lowest score on the hole takes the hole. If two people tie on the lowest score, the skin for the hole carries forward (so on the next hole you will be playing for two skins) or cancels out. How tied holes are handled is agreed upon by everyone playing before the round starts. Let me know if I need to expound on something more.

We can't expect Frank to pick his own brain for all the dumb n00b questions he's read! This should be stickied, but then again BroD's n00b primer thread was sticky-worthy, too...for a while.

Until I joined DGCR, I always thought the "bead" was literally the little nub of plastic in the center of the underside of the disc (left from some kind of centrifugal spinning process, I assume?).

I also used to think that all the Innova discs with marine life for the name (Shark, Stingray, et al) were floater discs...I never tested this, just believed what I was told by other n00bs when I started playing.

A circle 5 is a score on the hole where the person went out of bounds once.

So the "skin" doesn't necessarily have to be a monetary amount like a dollar? Skins can be beers, discs, or just a number?
