I'd send you a few bucks...probably better quality than crashbox :hfive:

DiscFifty 03-11-2020 10:36 AM

I just paid 4.50 to watch Brodie play the Beast course live. Worth while entertainment for the price.

Sports have always been reality TV.

I'm looking forward to watching the feature card.

Just signed up for DGN. I'd like to thank this thread ofr the reminder. All the $8.99 price quotes here had me concerned they raised their initially advertised $5/mo fee. Forgot there were so many non-PDGA members on this site. With the PDGA membership the cost is only $4.50/mo which is a no brainer. The mobile app looks great.

It definitely is putting a tiptoe across the line to becoming scripted reality TV.

I always suspected that DGCR was full of cranky old guys and now this whole Brodie thing has confirmed it.

araytx 03-11-2020 01:32 PM

Brodie addresses being on the feature card circa 2:38

I remember back in the early 2000's when people were cranky about Tiger Woods getting the vast majority of airtime and attention on the PGA. I reminded them then, and it seems appropriate now with Brodie, that 1) he doesn't control what gets aired, and 2) the businesses that air things are doing so to ultimately make money and will spend the most time on the guys with the most buzz around them. The fact that there is a "Brodie Post" here and not one (at least not active) on the other pros show that they are doing exactly what they should be doing for the time being at least.

I get the difference between Tiger and Brodie is that Tiger was already playing at an elite level but I think the theory still still applies.

It's alright, someone already compared him to LeBron earlier in the thread.

There will also be bonus content behind the paywall on DGN.

Thank you. That's what I thought but then jv's comment confused me (which is easily done). :p

I think now's a good time to share what was posted to Reddit a while ago:

Hmmmm. Now if this is the case, I still might have to get the app or whatever, as long as there IS post production coverage including Brodie. Normally I want to only watch the best of the best, but I must admit that I want to see Bro's round, whether great, a train wreck, or somewhere in between.

serious question - does this kill your interest for 1st round feature cards that have lower rated regional pros, or true Am players on them? Or are you like me and just watch every round, no matter who's on the card?

Flick Maniac 03-11-2020 04:21 PM

I tend towards skipping footage when there are underachievers on the card - even moreso when more than one. Or watch it but not their throws, especially if the others on the card are my favorites.

In other news, saw someone refer to BS as BroDiePie which I thought was pretty clever :)

Iím glad itís not every lead card but I do really enjoy the wildcard player. Local contest winner, junior champ, ultimate bro turned dgíer... Whatever. It adds a whole new perspective to the game. Especially in the first round when it means NOTHING, I say go for it!

I tend to watch all of the "big" tourneys regardless of who's on the cards. However, if it's a smaller tourney of lesser known or unknown players there has to be something that captivates me within the first couple of holes or I don't watch. If I see players making too many throws that look too close to my level of play, I just don't enjoy it very much. In the case of lesser skilled players. the course or camera work/coverage has to be special. Also, if it's single camera footage, the camera operator has to be pretty good. If not, I lose interest quickly, too.

This will probably get me bashed, but... I don't watch college sports because I don't want to watch the games if they're not played at the highest level. It's just not my thing. Of course, one could easily argue that neither the Orioles or Redskins play their games at the highest level either. LOL!

I've watched some regional tourneys that were good without top pros. I think that a couple of the Pittsburgh Flying Disc Open videos kept me interested. But that's not always the case.

Some guys just uploaded a video of the four of them playing a round at a new course I wanted to play. I watched about five minutes and lost interest. They were ~930 on average, about my skill level. But between the ha king through the course, and the hacking through the camera work, I just couldn't take it for long. I appreciate what they did, and hopefully my view showed up for them. But it just wasn't my cup of tea. In lieu of this type of video, I actually prefer single player " course run-through" type options.

And don't get me started about 5 player card coverage. I don't know why, but having that one extra player really bugs me, too. First world problems, right?

Thanks for asking, btw.

Pffff... You call that elitist? Please. I donít watch unless itís a record breaking round, has #1-4 ranked players in the world, covered by my favorite announcers AND Lloyd Weema has been banned from the premises. My time is just SO valuable and my tastes SO refined that all this ďplebe playĒ causes me physical pain to endure.

I'm just hoping he makes it on lead card for round 2.

Hah! I specifically only watch cards utilizing time machines that feature Prime Key, prime Doss, Innova Paul, and either prime Barry or Harp Ricky.

FOUR CLONES OF CLIMO OR BUST

Hampstead 03-11-2020 07:57 PM

I lost interest when Steady Ed stopped playing.

No offense to Lloyd, but I don't think I could handle more than a couple holes watching Mr. Weema. On the other hand, I'm very interested to see how Brodie does, though I expect it to be far from pretty.

Badger45 03-11-2020 08:32 PM

We all know Broskie isn't going to play anywhere near the level of the rest of the card. However, I'm interested to see how quickly he progresses as someone who can actually commit his time just to learning disc golf. Yeah, I'd rather see Eagle or Conrad on this card, but the ability to pull in interest from other crowds could be good for interest in the tour.

ray1970 03-11-2020 08:53 PM

The good thing is if Brodie comes out and looks really good then all of the haters might shut up.

The other good thing is if Brodie comes out and totally lays an egg then all of the fanboys might shut up.

Haters never shut up. Even if Brodie were to hypothetically crush it -- which he won't -- but even if that happened: Haters Gonna Hate.

The other thing is more likely, imo. Even just shooting his rating, there is going to be a BIG expectations re-set for some folks.

brutalbrutus 03-11-2020 09:31 PM

Like I've said already, anyone who thought brodie would be shooting 1000 rated rounds out of the gate is delusional.

Martin Dewgarita 03-11-2020 09:49 PM

So let's say he goes out and shoots his rating tomorrow. That will have him on the bottom, or very close to the bottom card. In all likelihood he will play significantly better, but still I wouldn't think he'll make the top 5 cards. So, the question is then, will he have coverage on Friday? I suppose his wife walking along with a cell phone for his vlog or something, but I'd doubt any of the other outfits would spend resources following a bottom card. I'm excited to watch whatever happens tomorrow, but I've also been intrigued in this since the beginning.

brutalbrutus 03-11-2020 09:54 PM

The question is whether the DGPT will allow them to film. Don't they charge people to do that?.. or was that only last year?

I mean I guess its possible he comes out tomorrow and with the adrenaline going, shoots a pretty good round. His putting would have to be on and he can't get into trouble on those tight woods holes. I'm kinda worried about those last few holes though. 17 is a nightmare for a newer player. I could see him taking two or three OBs on the last two holes pretty quickly... and they wouldn't even necessarily have to be bad shots.

Though after watching that vid he posted a couple days ago, he certainly has an eye for course management and where he need to play to, to be safe.

wolfmandragon 03-11-2020 10:09 PM

What so many are missing is that Brodie knows how to build a narrative beyond what anyone else has ever done in disc golf.

Yes, he has earned feature card exposure regardless how he plays in the tourney.

brutalbrutus 03-11-2020 10:12 PM

Paul's first rating was under 900 iirc... :D

I guess I was wrong... they actually had the same rating. 923 lol

WHat I was remembering was Paul's first tourney, which he shot below 900 both rounds but he played much better the next event before he got a rating.

Yep, after tomorrow he won't be on a featured/lead card for...some time. Maybe featured at the next big Discraft tourney. Maybe.

But he will likely have his rounds filmed Friday and Saturday, for his YouTube channel. I'd say it's not unlikely that he has some impressive throw-in or something that generates hype. "Brodie's Top 10 Throws of the Week" or whatever.

And in that case, more power to him. I'll watch it. But also, running hard for big throw-ins will cost him a lot of throws...especially at The bEast.

disco40 03-11-2020 10:34 PM

What I'm excited for is that Brodie is playing with great players, and that is going to stoke his competitiveness and get him around his mental blocks as quickly as possible. And he thrives under pressure, a real competitor. This is the best possible opportunity for him to improve his game rapidly (as if he wasn't improving at warp speed already - dude may already be a pro-level putter). Smart money is on him playing okay, not great and maybe crapping up a couple of holes, but the benefit to his game going forward, I'd bank on it.
