To who ever is doing the work at Cass Benton, keep up the Good Work! Whenever I'm up this way, I always try to play Cass and overall the old course was looking better then I've seen it in prior years visits. It was nice being able to walk down #9 and not have to deal with all the fallen trees. Thanks!

The new 9 holes at stony creek have tee pads! Any eta on baskets? Anyone know when the holes at Oakland university will be redone?

Future_Primitive 08-14-2015 09:24 AM

Looks like the new course at Ella Sharp Park (Jackson, MI) will be moving forward. Originally part of the $200,000 Weatherwax grant for the entire park improvements, they just secured a $15,000 donation from the Kiwanis Club specifically for the DG course.

MLive article on course

Hopefully they work with the right folks to ensure it is a quality course.

Reniger 08-17-2015 03:26 PM

Grand Isle Park in Plainfield (west of Grand Rapids) has 17 of 18 baskets, a nice layout with decent variety, and marked pads. I believe they plan to pour concrete pads, but this has not been completed as of 8/16.

They are working on Stony. The crew doing the work, has little interest in setting deadlines for people to get prickly about. Great group of guys who do immeasurable work for the local disc golf community. I have walked most of the holes and they will be a great addition to a world class facility. No eta.

The last review for Indy is hilarious. Rating it that low because you can't keep it in the fairway. "We compete with top AM1 players"...yet you lost 6 discs and were able to find 5 other bad thows. That's a lot of off fairway throws for top AM1 players lol. I'm horrible at disc golf and I've never lost one there (~25 rounds). Knocking down some weeds will be nice though.

Cascade Twp Park is RIP

The baskets were pulled yesterday.

The redesign is underway. I've been told the township is going to have the course in by this weekend. Whether or not that happens remains to be seen.

Tonight I was out with the fellow who submitted a redesign plan. The township has stated they are not going by his plan exactly. It will utilize the wooded area at the back of the park. Once all is said and done, I will try to pass along info.

apdrvya 08-19-2015 10:41 AM

I had Timg RIP the course. We will put a new page through when/if the redesign gets done :)

Not a huge deal but I am hearing of a 9 hole pole course at Woods and Waters Campground between white cloud and newaygo. I may go check it out tomorrow.

This was quite obvious when I played 10 days ago. They were pretty aggressive cutting back weeds/grass, opening up the fairways on many of the more open holes, but not overly so... big improvment in the spots where it's needed.

apdrvya 08-19-2015 04:15 PM

I also added LSSU dgc. Seems its been there a while but I found it on the scene today... :)

Bring water and sunscreen... not much in the way of shade.

The park is open daily from dawn until dusk. Please be advised that vehicles are not allowed to enter the park during winter and early spring, due to the roadways not being plowed and/or the ground being extremely soft. The park usually opens for vehicular traffic sometime around Easter.
could you update the location info with that news? this is michigan, we play wind, snow, sleet, rain, hail, lightning... having a course closed in winter/spring is something that should be mentioned in the course description. :)

wait, does this mean we can park elsewhere and walk in?

also , its an oakland county park? could you please write in how much it costs for residents/non residents per day if there is an entrance fee? i could not find info on website. dgscene says $2 to play.

All the new tees and baskets are in at Stony Creek. There are now two 18 hole courses they are calling:
Buckhorn North: consists of the first 18 holes of the previous 27 hole layout, completely unchanged in any way.

Buckhorn South: consists of the holes 19-27 of the previous 27 hole course (unchanged in any way) plus 9 completely new holes. South course features considerably more changes in elevation than the north, along with all the thick, nasty, blood drawing thorny rough we've come to expect from new holes on previously unused land.

Cascade Park in Cascade Township, MI.

Cascade To Get Dog Park
The park has been closed for about two weeks now, there is some MASSIVE construction going on, but I could not find any information. Finally, I dug it up on MLive today. Looks like they're adding 2 Basketball courts, a dog park, and a lot of parking from what I can see of the construction currently going on. With as much as they're pulling out, I don't see a full 18 going back in unless they start using some of the back side of the park that was not used on the previous course.

That is too bad. Hate to see us lose a course for a dog park. They are the most vile, proposterous things ever......and I am a dog lover and owner.

Reniger 09-01-2015 05:09 PM

Same. There is some unused property closer to I-96 that may come into play for more DG holes, and they still have old hole locations marked with orange stakes, but I'm a bit concerned at this point... To lose this much ground in an already crowded park means that at BEST, we save 9 holes and deal with more foot traffic that doesn't understand the sport being played and often becomes belligerent when asked to observe their own safety and recognize our same right to be there...

Shared parks are rough. Oh well. Guess the Grand Rapids area can move on...

A new design for Cascade is laid out. When the baskets will actually go in is up to Cascade Twp. Clearing for fairways back in the wooded area has already been worked on.

B3NDER 09-04-2015 10:27 AM

I hear they are /have cut out a ton of trees at cascade, which is a major bummer. That Park was already open enough.

A map of the new layout was posted on DG Scene for Cascade. I'm up at States, but when I get back I'm going to go out and see if the baskets have been put in yet.

That's actually REALLY exciting to hear! They are not only planning to put the course in, but add wooded holes??? WELL NEEDED IMPROVEMENT!

It was never a great course, far too open and simple, but it's a mile from my office so I still frequent it out of conveinience . Thanks for the info, Shide.

Cheers.

Anybody know any details about this place?

http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=7911

Not much info on the listing...is it a school, church, park...?

apdrvya 09-10-2015 08:01 AM

Using the existing information. It looks like this course is at overeisel reformed church (ORC) at the hall. Quick Google Maps search...

ru4por 09-10-2015 09:17 AM

Looks like we are losing Sunnybrook. A disc/ball golf course combo. I don't know the details of how or why the course is being pulled, but the baskets are up for sale. Never really worked well here, it did not seem like ownership was very engaged in the disc portion.

Looks like the baskets have been spoken for. Seems they are headed for the St Clair County area parks.

BogeyNoMore 09-10-2015 11:08 AM

Sunnybrook will be closing at the end of the month.
I heard some entity/business purchased the place and the whole thing will be leveled and that land used for some other commercial use. Items being liquidated.

flip_hyzer 09-10-2015 11:32 AM

I'm gonna have to make a trip to play Sunnybrook. Practically in my backyard, but never got around to playing because I never heard much hype.

Liquidation sale sounds interesting..Any info on when that's going down? I want one of those mowers to cut my lawn like a putting green!

ru4por 09-10-2015 12:43 PM

Good research, on Sunnybrook, guys. I wish both the old owners and the new investors nothing but the best of luck. Having been out there a couple times, visiting the course, pro shop, bar and bowling alley (most of them to get a freaking beer), I have to say it was one of the most poorly run establishments I have ever seen.

We're hoping John will sell us at least 12 of them. I just got approved for semi-redesign and expansion to 18 holes! Marysville and Lakeport State Park are next on the docket. Booyah!

Saw your note, Donny. Great news that they will be repurposed for a course(s)...opposed to someone's backyard practice basket.

We're hoping to get baskets from them. I'm not sure how far down the list we are. Either way we're a go on the expansion at East China. I might just end up loaning out a few of my own to get the 12 hole loop going in October if all of Sunny's baskets are spoken for already.

Super pumped though! We can finally upgrade and improve a few of the original holes to make them play and flow better. The parks dept has been great and have been making the course look better and better.

Looking forward to having you guys over in a few weeks. Jeff, you gonna swing back to this area this fall?

Well, it didn't look like putting baskets back in at Cascade is a top priority. They have all kinds of earth moving equipment at the park with a lot of the park looking like it is under construction & it's hard to tell if the fairways will be the same as what was laid out a few weeks ago. I will check progress again in a week or so.

ru4por 09-15-2015 12:40 PM

Just saw this review. The course is Grand Rapids Rotary North in Belmont Michigan. Below is some of the review posted my Durco, the course designer.

Other Thoughts: I am the course designer. There were a ton of factors I had to consider in the design of this course. It was a 3 year process with the wetlands being created. 3 wetlands designs were denied by the MDEQ. The wetlands took away about 1/3 of the area I hoped to use for the course. We had to get permits for everything. Permits to dig, permits to put cement in the ground, permits to put the baskets in... The Plainfield TWP Board had to approve the course design and the tee signs. We had to jump through so many hoops to get the course installed. The Parks Director wanted a course "That would be fun for everyone". The Plainfield Parks Dept. is planning on doing Doughnuts and Cider on Saturday mornings. So, they wanted it to be semi family friendly. (Thus the short tees on 1,5 & 18) The wetlands dictated the proximity of some tees and baskets. The White Pine Trail will be going through the park from hole 6 along 9,10,15 and 17. I had to design the course knowing the path/trail would be going through the park near the river in the future. There are plans for a basketball court (that will be to the right of hole #1) and 5 soccer fields in the open area of the park as you enter. So, safety for the future non disc golfing park goers was definitely involved in the design. The mining going on in the pond limited the area used for the course for now (liability reasons). Once the mining has completed, the course will go along the pond towards the camp ground, up to the river through the woods, then along the river through the woods and back to the existing course. This will allow us to eliminate some of the place holder holes (ex: #14) and stretch the course out.

The course is still pretty raw overall. It's only been in for 1 month. We are constantly working on the course trying to improve it. Future plans include building up/ adding structure to the mound #3s basket is atop. A rock wall/ berm on #11 making it an island green. Defining the Out of Bounds sand traps and lining the Out of Bounds with stakes and rope. Adding some little trees and bushes is in the works (we will have to get permits like we have had to get for everything).
Big Thanks to the Grand Rapids North Rotary for donating $18,000 for the course. The Plainfield Parks Dept has established a budget within their budget for the course. So, the course will always be kept nice and it will be improving every year.

Sound like a labor of love and a great addition to that area. apdrvya has been up there when is first went in. His usual, outstanding reveiw is available as well. Look forward to getting out that way, it has been a while since I got me some GR disc golf in.

Grizzly Oaks has been redesigned and is operational again. From Oakland University News:
Quote:

After a two-year closure prompted by construction of the Recreation and Athletic Outdoor Complex (RAOC), the 18-hole Grizzly Oaks Disc Golf Course is now partially redesigned, officially reopened and ready for play.

Located immediately east of the RAOC complex and Field Events space, the course is available to the entire Oakland University community to use free of charge.

Highlights of the reopened course include:
•players’ ability to start and finish in the same basic area, along the very north portion of the course alongside Meadow Brook Road;
•nine new holes and nine holes preserved from the original course;
•total course distance of 4,494 feet, 2,472 on the front nine and 2,022 on the back nine;
•fairways ranging in distance between 150 feet and more than 300 feet;
•hole designs that take advantage of the natural environment, offering a wide variety of shot selection at each hole.
Participants who drive to the course are encouraged to park in P-11 or other officially designated university parking spaces. Vehicles will not be permitted to park alongside Meadow Brook Road or in the grassy area around the field event space.

The course is open from dawn to dusk, seven days a week. Play is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
I've yet to get out there to see for myself... busy this Sat and Sun, so it'll be a while till I can check out the changes.
