Brodie is live streaming a round with Paul and others. Why haven't any other disc golf pros recorded practice rounds or livestreamed their rounds ever? Guy has been streaming for 5 minutes and he almost has 1k viewers. Pretty nuts.

JuanA 02-19-2020 09:39 AM

Smart move by Discraft...the guy does know how to get exposure.

is he charging $5 a month

Jolt 02-19-2020 02:02 PM

Brodie is really starting to get good, he played the WTO layout in his latest video "2 Brodie Smith's vs. Paul McBeth" and he did just fine.
Pauls round must have been insane. . . a -15 !!! 45 . .

Keller 02-19-2020 02:09 PM

When is he actually going to play a tournament?

No more fun rounds, lets see what he really scores

Because practice is just that. Practice. There is focus involved.

Brodie is taking a different approach, of course.

But 90% of pros doing this for a living don't want to have to be entertaining when they are prepping for an event that is their job.

I just happened to turn on that stream yesterday while he was answering some questions waiting for a group to play thru. Iirc, he said he had decided yet but was starting to look at some options.

If I had to guess, he will probably play some local Texas events on not too hard of courses to try and get that 900 rating established for Tour events later in the summer.

I am looking at this from a financial standpoint as well. All these guys do is drive around and play disc golf. I have a hard time believing they canít find an hour a day or every other day to record something. That would lead to an increased fan base for them that would generate money from views and from an increase in product sold. I just canít believe none of them have tried. People are eating this up from Brodie and he isnít even half as talented (yet) as the game as the rest of these guys are.

But they could probably leverage their increased exposure into a better sponsorship deal, sell more signature discs etc. I would imagine that Nate Sexton is very happy with his choice to do commentary. He must have sold so many Firebirds because of the exposure he got!

DiscFifty 02-20-2020 02:31 AM

Good interview. Talks about his possible rating, winning tournaments, etc. (It was recorded a few weeks ago btw.)

2 Brodie Smiths, 1 Paul McBeth (Too bad Paul's round wasn't covered....wow..)

"No more fun rounds, lets see what he really scores"

Probably better than most people only playing seriously for 2 months. lol..

There are plenty of practice round videos out there. Course previews, AJ solo at the Memorial, etc.

If they want more money, they'll want more exposure.

Flick Maniac 02-21-2020 12:26 AM

First rated round at 931

brutalbrutus 02-21-2020 01:05 AM

Hmm... it was in Huntington beach, I wonder if Paul or Hannah caddied for him.

brutalbrutus 02-21-2020 01:14 AM

That's where the filmed the first Champ vs Chumps if anybody wants to know what the course looks like.

First rated round jitters are real, I don't care who you are. I bet he would have cleaned up 4-5 strokes off his game if he had gotten a second round on the same day.

brutalbrutus 02-21-2020 01:35 AM

I would imagine they had played a few rounds. That's Paul original home course. They probably played a round or two before and he decided spur of the moment to join the league night.

His twitter says...

Well that sucked.

lol

brutalbrutus 02-21-2020 02:09 AM

Lulz… I had completely forgotten about Paul's blond hair fauxhawk

To be fair though the Firebird is innovas most popular fairway driver right behind the tee bird. I donít think his sales would have differed too much

Thats crazy talk. Do you see many KJ Teebirds around compared to Sexton Firebirds?

davetherocketguy 02-21-2020 08:28 AM

931 is pretty freaking good for a first rated round.

DiscJunkie 02-21-2020 08:58 AM

Just one person's opinion.
First, Brodie is progressing fairly well. Lead Card progress? No.
But first rated round is 923, after what, a month or two? Really? That's impressive. Wow.

Second, Brodie is trailblazing a path for disc golf pros.
If we are beginning to make inroads into YouTube revenue streams via CCDG, Jomez and others, this guy is going to show us how Pros can start tapping into that online revenue stream.
You may love him or hate him, but you all need to pay attention.
He is a trailblazer...follow his lead if you want to stay ahead of the curve.

I mostly agree with you here. But to be fair, Sexton Firebirds are a bit less OS than stock Firebirds, making them more useful for the average player. I've heard KJ Teebirds are generally more OS than a regular TB, which is far less useful as a straight-to-fade disc for most people. Sexton not only picked a popular mold, he made it more accessible for the public.

When those league ratings go official, it looks like the 931 will come down a bit since it looks like all of the rounds were on the same layout. Still 920 something is pretty good for a first rated round.

Nate Sexton also has to be far more recognizable than KJ to the average fan too. Especially here stateside. You see Nate everywhere. You catch KJ on a few cards here and there on tourney coverage.

Do dare, by all means. I have no dog in the fight. Just reporting. Although I am firmly in the "not gonna be rated 1000 anytime soon" camp.

Jay Dub 02-21-2020 03:24 PM

Don't let the BSAWs see you say that stuff.

I do. Of course, that depends on how you define soon.

brutalbrutus 02-21-2020 07:03 PM

Certainly much sooner than me.

Looks like Waco may be his first major tournament. Interesting choice to take on the bEast as his pro debut. Something tells me he isn’t going to fare well, especially if it’s as windy as it usually is

brutalbrutus 02-21-2020 07:31 PM

That was a textbook case of what happens when you start getting tired. His footwork went to hell and he wasn't getting a good follow thru with his arm swing. Definitely needs to work on his DG conditioning and endurance...

I'm not sure he will be allowed to play Waco. That round won't be official before then. The league ends on mar12 and the next update is mar10 the same week as Waco. SO unless they let him slide in with an unofficial round rating... The Weema Rule would still be in effect...

This is about my favorite thing of the moment. Lol. PDGA makes an obscure rule that effectively affects one person at the time. Why? Is weema that bad to play with? Is he bringing that much of a negative image to the sport? Nobody really knows... Comes along the biggest name (in social media online networking marketing world) that the PDGA has ever seen, and boom, random obscure rule prohibits player from making an impact.

Well he said unofficially it would be, so Iím sure he is doing some research to see if that really will be his first tournament. It is also the closest major tournament to Dallas that is coming up. Guess we will see come march

brutalbrutus 02-21-2020 08:57 PM

So... we get the Brodie Clause?:D
