Drew Gibson rear leg kick
 
Drew posted a video with a distance tip, and while there's not much new there (plant with a closed hip and shoulder) I did notice something about his form. On both throws, his rear foot kicks up above the knee. This is pretty much the polar opposite of toe dragging. Is this typical? What are the advantages/disadvantages of this?

He's countering the swing arm with his rear leg to stay balanced. I don't think there's anything particularly noteworthy about how high his knee finishes. Everyone is going to dissipate speed in slightly different ways in the follow through. The only thing the rear leg can be doing at that point in the throw is helping you balance. Probably not best to try and copy this but rather see what your body does to keep balanced naturally. Toe dragging isn't really bad necessarily (except its terrible for your shoes!) as long as its not really a weighted drag and more of a "ground graze" like in Eagle's followthrough. At that point in the the throw all weight should be on the front leg and a little concrete drag isn't going to affect things much.

Otherwise known as the Climo or Feldy kick. It's basically all the same move, just reacting to counter balance/weight different balance/posture/shot. I do both, just depends on the shot. Never had shoe wear/tear issues with the good type of "toe drag".

Would it be true that the harder you throw, the more you transition from a toe drag to that upkick?

So you don't try to kick, it's just a natural consequence of your motion?

1. I don't think is a true statement. It has more to do with counter balancing your posture/balance/shot.

2. True. Although to learn it, you may have to try to do it first to then become natural motion.

Then maybe the more the torso leans the higher the leg must raise to counter act.

Here the difference is in the bracing/posture on the front leg.

GG gets more upright on the front hip and everything moves forward freely.

Drew braces up more behind the front hip and creates more change of direction/rotation instead of moving forward, so the rear foot gets kicked up in recoil as the torso tilts back upright and sends the rear knee forward.
