How wooded do we like it?

prefers wooded courses to open ones.

This comment was made, and it got me thinking "how do we DGCR reviewers like our courses?"

I did a little analysis of 3.5+ rated 18+ hole courses with 10 or more reviews:

How Wooded        How Hilly        Count        Total        Percent        Top 3 courses
Lightly……        Mostly Flat        36        163        22%        Selah Ranch - Creekside (TX), Bill Frederick Park - T2: The Turkeynator (FL), Trophy Lakes (SC)
Lightly……        Moderately        44        114        39%        Milo McIver State Park (OR), Old Post DGC (AR), Bryant Lake Park (MN)
Lightly……        Very Hilly        14        26        54%        BAP Disc Golf (ME), Base Camp Adventure Lodge DGC (UT), Blue Valley Park (MO)
Moderately        Mostly Flat        97        242        40%        Blue Ribbon Pines DGC (MN), Zobel Park (WI), Madisonville City Park DGC (KY)
Moderately        Moderately        177        290        61%        Idlewild (KY), Justin Trails Big Brother DGC (WI), Harmon Hills (TN), Maple Hill (MA)
Moderately        Very  Hilly        74        98        76%        Branson Cedars Resort Treehouz DGC (MO), Highbridge: Granite Ridge & Gold & Blueberry (WI)
Heavily……        Mostly Flat        29        79        37%        Farm Life Disc Golf (NC), Shelton Springs DGC (WA), Castle Hayne Park (NC)
Heavily……        Moderately        71        128        55%        Selah Ranch - Lakeside (TX), Tyler State Park (PA), Shawshank (TX), Sugaree (NC)
Heavily……        Very Hilly        47        62        76%        Phantom Falls (CO), Horning's Hideout - Meadow Ridge (OR), Magic Meadows DGC (CO)

Count: Number of 18+ hole courses rated 3.5+ (10+ reviews)
Total: Number of 18+ hole courses on the site (10+ reviews) - any rating
Percent: what percent of total are considered "really good" by us

So Moderately Wooded wins.

Light 22 39 54
Mod. 40 61 76
Heav 37 55 76

Certainly looks like wooded is better than open on average, and that pretty clearly shows that elevation makes a difference to the average reviewer.

Condensing/isolating the data to just "How Wooded" and "How Hilly"

How Wooded        Count        Total        Percent
Lightly……        94        303        31%
Moderately        348        630        55%
Heavily……        147        269        55%

How Hilly        Count        Total        Percent
Mostly Flat        162        484        33%
Moderately        292        532        55%
Very Hilly        135        186        73%

It appears that how hilly a course is has a much larger affect on how we rate courses than how wooded.

That is CRAZY that Light and Flat are right at 31/33 nearly identical, and Mod and Mod are both 55%. Then the big jump from 55 to 73 for increasing hills, while staying the same old 55 for increasing woods.

Maybe the moral of the story is "Hitting trees is fun for some of the people some of the time, but throwing downhill is fun for all of the people all of the time"

So basically
Woods + hills =

Open + flat =

I like it so hilly and wooded it makes the chuckers quit and the Tarheels whine like spoiled princesses.
