Working on balance helps a ton. Body weight training doing one leg dead lifts and beginner shrimp squats really help me balancing on one leg, which is really the goal with the swing.

I'm an advocate of using a rubber mallet. Heavy enough that you feel it, but not so much that you can't fully throw it. Also, less chance of serious damage to other objects.
