I always like to leave a course a little cleaner than I found it. Whether is is picking up trash, or removing deadfall from the fairway, I just feel like if everyone helped out a little all the courses would be better for it. That being said, it is more rewarding to tidy up a private course. The owners do huge amounts of work to make a course so if I can help out I know it is appreciated. I can clean up litter on a public course all day and barely anyone notices and all the trash will be right back the next time I visit so there is less feeling of doing good. I still pick up regardless of whether the course is public or private I just think my efforts are more rewarding when I am helping a specific individual.
