I have a little experience with this sort of vocabulary. I'm lesbian, and my ears prick up hard when I hear "gay lifestyle," because I know it's coming from a place of either antipathy or ignorance. The phrase sets the group of people aside as "others" or "different," living strangely alien lives compared to the normals (sic.).

People are people. LGBT people don't have "lifestyles," they have lives, the same as other people do.
Of course you have a different lifestyle. Does a Christian live just like a Muslim? Is it "Islamaphobic" to say that? Does a rich man live just like someone who's homeless? Is it bigoted to say that? How about a Latin family who speaks no English vs a typical "white" family. Is it racist to say they live differently? Does a transgender couple live just like a heterosexual couple? Is it transphobic to point out any differences there may be?

It's ok that people are different from each other. It doesn't take away from our humanity. Recognizing those differences and still treating each other with respect and love is what we should strive for.

This sidesteps the point. The phrase has a history of being used as a dog-whistle term by those who are opposed to LGBT equality. Context matters.

No, they are living within their frameworks or reality.

It doesn't change the fact that they are all just people trying to live their own lives.

When someone says trans or gay lifestyle, they are using that as a negative.

Don't really hear people talking about the heterosexual lifestyle.

Nobody said they aren't people living their lives. But they ARE different lives. And there's nothing negative about saying that.

This existence is about people living life. Each one of us a life different from the others. We're ALL living different lives. No need to single some out as being more different.

I think it just hits a nerve. "Gay lifestyle" has been used to suggest a hedonistic promiscuous way of life when most gay people are in relationships and are as boring as straight people in relationships. Really there are no cultural differences between me and the same-sex couple down the street so our lives are really very similar. We live in the same town, work on the same college campus, have the same friends and go to a lot of the same local events. They just don't have anybody in the house who will leave the toilet seat up. Focusing on that one difference is kinda absurd in the face of all the other things we have in common.

I agree, Hamp, that we are all living different lives, in some way or another. The singling out of some that are "more different" though, is human nature. There's no need to do it because it's automatic. The trick, like I said before, is to figure out how we are going to treat that life (person, people) while recognizing that difference. (Hopefully with respect and love)

Edit: I'm not specifically talking about LGBTQ here, but of course it applies.
