Would be nice for an organisation to be able to force people to join them

I would like to see membership required for anything over a C tier. Around here the number of non-members in most events has shrunk to almost nothing anyway.

No arguments here. They just need a proper mechanism for collection, rather than to require the TD to figure it out after the event.

I don't see much distinction between B- and C-tiers. Especially for the Ams, since a lot of C-tiers are giving players packs and paying 100%, anyway. Sometimes the only local event is a B-tier, and trying to entice local casual players to test the tournament waters is easy if they can do it on their home course, without buying a full membership.

Then again, for the more popular B-tiers, the ones that fill well in advance, it might be nice for TDs to limit early registration to members, as a perk of membership.

I think you misunderstood me. I am not in favor of forcing anyone to join after the fact of an event regardless of tier and regardless of collection structure. I would actually be fine personally with simply requiring membership for all events but I don't think that would work in some areas at this time.

How many non-members are playing at a typical SC event with a full field? Here the number is usually less than 5.

Something like that. Scanning results, I see a range of 1-6.

But the B-tiers that don't fill had as many as 16 non-members last year. Others had none; just depends on the event.

It's why I'd favor the rule for an initial entry period, giving members a chance to take all the spots in an event that fills; but otherwise, after that initial priority registration, open to everyone, to increase attendance and perhaps bring in a few potential future members.

It had been approved in 2017 for the 2018 new rules book & competition manual, but was 'suspended' before the rule being activated, to be precise.

Just think of other sports...
How many sports even allow non-members & non-current members to compete in sanctioned events?!?!?
Fill in your idolised pro football team, and your local am football team's name, and then see if they would allow you to walk up to their game and say you wanted to join for their upcoming game whilst being a non-member.
