Default HOD 5/19/14: Hudson Mills Metropark - Monster

Hudson Mills Metropark - Monster
Course Rating: 4.19, 32 reviews
Hole 14, Short: 650 ft, Long: 1038

Here's the famed signature hole on the Monster at Hudson Mills ( for which, I believe the course is named). Very timely as DGLO is being played here in a couple of weeks.
Being quite familiar with this hole, I completely agree with the caption from this photo:
Quote:
A very long hole. Getting a drive to land in the fairway is a major challenge for most players. Once there, the player is confronted with numerous challenging obstacles. The fairway becomes wide open 300' from the basket.
Long Tee: Short pad is visibile 400 ft ahead, up on the left - it opens up quite a bit there as a landing zone from the long. Narrows down for a few hundered feet after that.

Mid fairway (from the short tee): Photo says "short tee" but this is pic is taken well past that. This shot does not show obstacles you have to avoid off the tee, and you can see the basket in the distance between the bushes. There is no phot showing the look from the short- guess I need to take one.

The rough on the left is bad. The rough on the right is brutal (i.e. will draw blood).

I think Craftsaman said it best:
Quote:
Try for a 3, and you'll proabably get no better than a 5. Try for a 4, and you just might get it.

I don't even bother playing the long on this hole - I don't have near the distance to avoid the trouble.
From the short, I hyzer flip an R-Pro Boss toward the boulder (not pictured... that photo is not off the tee, or zoomed in way past the short tee) on the left side of the fairway, turns right and usually fades back to the left side of the fairway, not far past the boulder, sometimes a bit in the rough. Another R-Pro Boss to get me close, then Challenger to APX for a 4.

If I'm in the rough too deep for a decent 2nd shot, it's a 5.

Long: I'd be ultra tempted to just throw a Buzzz here to avoid danger.

Short: Maybe the same. Possibly Patriot if I'm feeling on that day.

Yea, I played the longs here. It was terrible. I think I took an 8 or 9 lol. Wicked trouble from the longs. I threw my Patriot out just to try to get fairly close to the short tee, then Patriot again and found the nasty brush, then a bunch of garbage throws, hitting all the fairway trees. It wasn't a good hole for me lol. Now I play from the shorts. 4 is possible, but I usually 5 it since I can't seem to stay out of trouble on this one. It is definitely true, if you try for 3, you're usually looking at 5 or 6. If you plan it for a 4 then it's possible.

The long tee on this hole should be fixed. Most of that junk on the left side should be taken out so players have a safe (and visible) option out that way. That was the way it played when initially installed, at least.

The pics seem a few years old; some of the bushes in the second pic are gone and the tree to the left of the central cedar is dead and mostly gone. Pic might be from about where the boulder is.

Short tee is fun. Long tee, not so much.

Just played a round from the longs here Saturday. Took a 6 on the Monster
From the longs: I'm RHFH. I'm usually throwing a champ xcal 2 or 3 times if I stay out of the stuff. Ideally: Xcal, Xcal, Fbird, Putt
From the Shorts: A little more room to work with here. TeeDevil, Firebird, Putt.

Short: Star Wraith, then Firebird OH in the fairway a couple of times. Wiz upshot as needed. Finally putt.
Long: Star Wraith towards the short tee, then see above.
