Default Help! Stuck at 300'

After playing a couple of years, decided to try to actually learn how to drive. I throw my Valkyries about 300', Teebirds about 270'. Every once in a while it just clicks and I'll throw to 340'. I've really tried to focus on slowing down and pulling along the line. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Three throws from Christmas Day. I was throwing into a headwind. The Valkyrie went about 280', the Teebirds about 260'.

A few things stick out immediately:
1) You start your backswing with your head. You should turn back, and because you are turning back your head will be brought back. Don't start the backswing by looking back. (Watch your video at about 0:18s)

2) Your cross step is too big, and because it is so big you have your left foot turned way too far back. Your back foot should be perpendicular to your line, and you should stay on the toes of your back foot. Just don't put the back heel down at all.

3) You need to swing back/turn back further. This is you at the peak of your reach back. Think about if you were trying to pull something really heavy through from there. You wouldn't have any power at all in this position. (See doorframe drills)

4) The above image also shows that you are planting your front leg way open. Your whole body should be turned further away from the target, and your front foot/leg should plant closed to the target. The whole "shift your weight from behind" thing.

Excellent advice Clard. The exaggerated second step and shallow reach back stood out to me as well.

Thanks for the feedback - this gives me some specific areas to work on.

I'm going to start by focusing on two items:
  • Slow down and shorten the x-step. I think I've been trying to add momentum to increase distance, and this has lead to a bigger x-step that puts both of my feet out of position. I'm hoping that by shortening it up a bit, I can keep my rear foot up on the ball and my front foot perpendicular to the shot.
  • Focus on my shoulders during the reach back. I've been watching a lot of videos after I read your feedback, and I'm thinking that if I focus more on my shoulder rotation rather than looking back, I'll get a better result. I'm going to pull my left shoulder towards the basket and drop my right shoulder a bit to help accentuate the reach back.
Once I get over my Christmas cold and find a tee pad clear of ice, I'll be putting your feedback into practice.

Thanks again!
