Default 2019 PDGA Amateur Disc Golf World Championships

Any PDGA representatives here with knowledge of the process know when an announcement will come for the 2019 Am Worlds location? In the bid process packet it simply says “Selection Announcement: After December 1, 2017” with the deadline for submission being November 1st 2017.

I am sure I am not the only one considering acquiring enough points in 2018, but part of that consideration will be the location of Am Worlds 2019. Tournament registrations are already starting to go up for next year and the possibility to start accumulating 2018 points is less than a month away.

Not a PDGA representative (and I think you're unlikely to get one to post here), but I did speak to Mike Downes last month and he mentioned, without any details, that they got quite a few bid packages for 2019 Am Worlds. From the sound of it then (~3 weeks ago) there was still some work to do to whittle the bids down to finalists and then to pick one. In other words, I doubt any announcement is imminent, but it will probably happen by the end of the year.

Yeah I feel like if they are going to start opening registration earlier and earlier on these events, this stuff too needs to be nailed down and announced sooner. Three of the most popular events of the year area already open and full for the most part, people should know whether its feasible for them to make it to worlds the following year before making their plans for the upcoming season. I'm sure they will get there though, at least I hope. Maybe worlds needs to be planned out two years in advance going forward.

Glad to hear they are getting multiple bids though, I know in the past that hasn't always been the case.

Already is.

We submitted our bid in the fall of 2016 for the 2018 AM worlds. The club / LOC started working on it two years out.

I think he meant, more like, announced 2 years out. A full 2 years.

Or, at the very least, announced before registration begins for events in the year preceding worlds. Those are the events at which points will be won, for the invitations.

Didn't use to be an issue, but it's becoming one. Growing pains, and all that.

I think the biggest roadblock to moving up the bid/announcement time-table is who is involved with the decision making. As Events Manager, Downes is the point man for these things. The problem is he is nearly constantly on the road from April through October, making it tough for him to give the bid selection process the time it deserves in order to announce it, say, mid-summer rather than in December.

Perhaps the 2020 hosts could be selected from the bevy of 2019 bids that were received, which could jump everything up by about 12 months. That's assuming that one of the 2019 bidders can make the adjustments necessary to do it in 2020 instead, of course.

The flipside is pushing the bidders even further back. If the PDGA wanted to announce 2020 bids by summer 2018, they've had to have bids submitted by, when, early Spring, meaning the hosts would have had to decide to bid, when, mid-2017?

With players winnings points up to 20 months before Worlds, the calendar's already pushed back pretty far.

I don't offer a solution, only recognition of the problem.

I think the point is this: Say I'm thinking of going to Am Worlds in 2019. I'll go if it's in a reasonable distance, but if it is on either coast I'm out. In my area the best chance at a points gobble I have is Glass Blown, which opened registration a month ago. You kinda force me to sign up for Glass Blown with no idea where Am Worlds is. Glass Blown is a very expensive proposition, and that's a lot of money to lay out on a flyer.

If the big events are going to open registration in the late fall, maybe the PDGA should push up the time frame of announcing the site to say October. If they don't have time during the In-season part of the schedule to make these decisions, you would have to announce two locations in one off-season and get the announcements cycle more like 2 1/2 years ahead of the event to avoid the situation I mentioned above. That would push the bid preparation stuff to more like three years out.

Having bids three years out for an event causes challenges as well, So I guess it depends on which one causes more problems. Or they could smack places like Glass Blown around and tell them no registration until January, which would also fix the issue.

To be clear, I have no dog in this hunt. That's just the issue as I understand it.

A bit off-topic but...How does one go about getting into World's? I earned a ton of points this season and would love to go to Charlotte but a local that went last year told me they have changed the format for entry. Is it ratings based now? Do you need to play a certain number of tourneys to get in? Just once in my disc golfing career I'd like to play Worlds and Charlotte is closer than many other places to my home. Any help here would be much appreciated!
