Just like the title, how is a disc designed? Any experts out there to let us in on the secret?
Does someone decide on what line they want to take, speed, glide, hss and lss and then create a model with wing elements that lead to that line? Because I feel like I have seen the same kind of design on two discs and they are different lines. Or does someone just make a model, mold it and see how it flies? I did search the forums, no luck. A documentary on the idea, design, model, molding, and manufacture of discs would be awesome. Sponsored Links

Had this question in my head. It would be awesome if someone like innova gave tours of the factory, people would definetly enjoy it.

Disc companies will not show you how they mold/design discs. If they showed you they would have to kill you.
There is not much originality in the disc world. Every company has copied Innovas products at some point or used tried and true molds as a bases to build off of. Dave even knows people copy their stuff. I asked Dave Dunapace about disc design and got this answer...also this page has a lot of other disc design questions he answered too. http://thespintv.com/category/ask-us...ipace/page/10/ Here is a question I asked him about Ken Climo as a bonus. The last question he has answered on The SpinTV was one of mine...go figure. http://thespintv.com/category/ask-us/dave-dunipace/ There is some good reading there if you have never read it, it is worth a look. You know I was watching that "How it's Made" show the other day, wondering if they ever did one on discs. I figured with all the mundane things they have done for that show why not golf discs?

There is no one answer.
CAD and some trial and error play a big role. |

Or can you put known curves and angles into a wing and have a good idea whether is will be OS or US and such? I remember looking at Innova wing designs and noticed that discs with fade had concave curved wings while discs with turn had more flat wing designs. Even if there was some kind of concave, it was done with straight angles instead of a curve. |

there are some general factors like you noticed with convex and concave rims as well as where the top and bottom of the mold come together or beaded discs vs beadless but its hard to know EXACTLY how a disc will fly from a computer model and its hard to EXACTLY mold a disc like its modeled after.
Some surely have been a accident really while others have undergone more extensive R&D with other molds based off it or the concept. Companies definitely have a different ways to go about creating new mold designs. Science matters a little bit for sure! |

This is what I was thinking, too.

This is still one thing I am clueless on. How do they make golf discs? It's one of science's greatest mysteries.
