A friend of mine has a cheapie brand (park n sun) disc golf basket. It works fine as a practice basket but the discs that came with it are completely unusable.

The number of discs you have is neglectible; what matters is that you have good discs (can be only one disc).

That is a great starting point.

If this turns out to be a good hobby for you, do yourself a favor and skip the 'faster discs are farther' phase.

And read up. This website has lots good info.
