Default Patent Pending?

Why is a "scramble recovery" putt called a "Patent Pending"? It seems to be a putt where you have to take a stance with your back to the basket? Where did that term come from?

Goes way back. Has something to do with placing your heel on the Pat. Pending raised letters in the disc used as a marker when taking a reverse stance.

The first time I heard it was a clash video narrated by Bully Krump. It was at Winthrop gold. Had Ken Climo, Barry Shultz, and I think Dave Feldburg and Michael Johansen. Climo had to take a stance against a tree with his back to the basket. I thought it was something Billy made up on the spot.

EMac once told me that the reverse or backwards stance (butt facing the basket) was called the "Patent Pending" because no one claimed outwardly to have invented the shot (or the stance). So the "patent pending" was a joke that until Mr. Mystery Discgolfer received the credit for his/her invention, they weren't discussing it. I have heard rumor that it was Russell, however.

Don't know where the name came from. Others call it reverse cowgirl, ha ha.

As to the inventor? I believe it arose in multiple places at multiple times much like all other styles of play. When I first jump putted (ok, putt jumped) I'd never seen anyone else do it though by understanding the rules knew it to be legal and I liked it. I don't claim to have invented it.

The story I always understood (referencing the same Clash DVD as gogo) from Billy's commentary there was that it was a tongue in cheek thing between Climo and Schultz as to which of them invented it.

But anytime I use it in commentary is a tip of the cap to Billy and that reference.

Maybe I read too deep?

This is what I always knew it as.

They called the shot the Barry Schultz until climo pulled out video of himself throwing the shot. Became the paton pending due to the "dispute". Used to hear it from Billy Crump vids all the time
