Default Gilson Park---Wilmette, IL (Need History)

I purchased an oringal Mach 1 this morning from a Craigslisting. This basket is hole 18 from Gilson Park in Wilmette, IL. Some believe it was the first course to have baskets in Illinois. I found out the course was installed in the 1976 to 1978 range. It was pulled in the early 80's because it became so popular the small park could not handle the traffic. Some believe West Park in Joliet was the first course with baskets. Anyone know the history?

I was always told that West Park was the 1st (1979), but there were a couple of courses on the north side that were probably put in around the same time. I new some old timers (back then) that were in the Illinois Frisbee Assn. and they told me about the course in Joliet opening up. Then came Shorewood and New Lenox. We did go up and play Libertyville, but I can't seem to remember playing Wilmette back then (although I might have).

I got word from some of the old timers Steve Matul PDGA #8 & Tom McManus PDGA #1276 that it was indeed the first course in Illinois with baskets. I'll also confirm with Alex Bingman PDGA #4803 the next time I see him.

Our own course directory (DGCR) lists West Park as the "oldest course in Illinois", But is it the 1st? Its possible Wilmette predates it. I would like to know when exactly it was put in though. I'll try and ask some other long time players up there that I know, if they can confirm it too.

Awesome.

I also got some back information. WXRT ran a Frisbee Day Frisbee Golf Tournament. The Band UFO played at the park that day. They could not confirm the date.

I loved UFO back then! I saw them at Alpine Valley though.

I remember WXRT, But not those events. It still says 1979, the same year West Park went in.

In 1973 we moved from the city to Bolingbrook. Joliet was right down I-55, so we spent alot of time down there. West Park will always be home for me.

Very cool.

When I first started getting really into DG, I told my dad about it. He immediately remembered Gilson Park in Wilmette. He remembered reading a newspaper article about the course in the 70's.

I have always been told that West park was the first. Were any of the courses in the late 70's/early 80's installed as object disc golf? I guess what I'm asking is....did West Park originally have baskets? or was it object golf?...........What kind of shape is the basket in Brett?
