Resurrecting this thread after watching MJ throw his mantis at the 2017 PFDO. I picked one up a few months back to see what it's all about. After a few throws, it became clear that this disc could stick around for a while (I've been throwing FD's for fairways since they were released). The Mantis had a lot of live up to in comparison to my beloved FD's.

Now, as a dg'er that started playing when you had to flex your disc's for distance, I found this disc to be quite nice. I like throwing hyzerflip shots and this thing does it beautifully. For players that are getting up in age and don't have the arm speed or power they used to, this disc could easily find a spot in your bag. Very easy to control and shape lines. My sidearm is pretty weak, maxing out at 300 for the most part, so holes that require a left to right shot in the 330-360 range can be problematic. The Mantis, right out of the box, has been great for this particular shot.

The Mantis hasn't necessarily supplanted the FD's from my bag, but I find that it's getting more and more air time for me.

I've tried a couple of Big Z Mantises... bagged one for a while... lost it, never replaced it.
I prefer my Amp for my stable/neutral fairway slot.

The Mantis is an amazing disc. My only fairway driver. Big Z for hyzer flips and turnovers, 2013 ace race ti for teebird shots and crystal sparkle for beef. The glide is awesome and the rim feels great as well. The ace race discs are kind of ugly but the plastic feels great and the flight is perfection. Should be able to find some at your local pias or online.

Well as a guy nearing 50 this disc is a staple in my bag. It's simply dependable. The Z goes straight and fade a touch, Big Z turns a bit and returns, and the X is for those shots that must go left to right without turning-and-burning.
If I were younger maybe I would throw a Teebird or Undertaker or Thunderbird for straight shots, but as to where I am, this mold works at getting me 300-325' down the fairway safely.

Good info there, it will tell you about the TWO versions of that disc!

Ace Race Proto= Massive Beef!

Retooled Production version= Understable.
Yeah - still have one of my Ace Race Mantis: 150 class, but pretty damn stable.

Sounds like the Sampo. Sad.

On that older post of the Mantis the true production run that somebody linked on here, Micheal Johansen said the Mantis Flew like an XL but further like a low low Distance Driver not a true Fairway Driver. The old Ace Race disc was going to be a fairway teebird but more overstable and way understable like a Archangel if under 167 grams. They had to give the disc more rim to make the disc more stable and it almost covers the Avenger line now, but a bit more stable.

Actually Make that from above: They had to give the disc more rim to make the disc more stable to flight consistency and it almost covers the Avenger SS line now, but a bit more stable. The Ace Race disc was inconstant as a disc.

Can't find Mantis now on DC page, is it OOP?

I had an Ace Race 150g Mantis in Ti that was pretty beefy like S-PD almost. My lil bro borrowed it and got his first ace with it, so I gave it to him. FH ace on Rockburn hole 7, couldn't believe it. That hole has been my nemesis. Last year all his discs and his friend's discs got creamed by a cement truck.

I have a couple Badfish tourney stamped Z Mantis that are crazy overstable, almost like a Firebird. Also have Badfish Z Heats that fly like Champ Teebird3s. I picked up a regular production Z Mantis and Z Heat because I liked my Badfish ones fly, but then I could not believe how much less stable they are. I agree the regular production Heat was similar to FD and Mantis similar to XL.

No, just Discraft's new site is terrible. The place you're first drawn to, if looking to see what discs they make, is that "Collection" menu on the left side....but that's just what the online store has in stock. Well, let's go to "Categories" --> "Drivers": back to the stock in a random online-store-front-display style. Glide, next to a Flick, next to a... Crank?
They need another redesign...
