Default Traverse City - Hickory Hills

Do any locals have info on what is going on at Hickory Hills? I try to visit Traverse City every year around this time and I always make a stop at that course. I notice on DGCR now that the original 18 is now closed/under construction, and there is now a different 18 that is also listed as under construction but is playable. Is the course being moved to new land? Are they turning it into 36 holes? Am I going to be okay to play there this weekend or should I avoid it until construction is done?

Seconding this request. I'd like to play Hickory Hills this weekend as well, but don't want to drive from Ludington to Traverse if there's nothing there worth playing.

Third, heading up there in a couple of weeks and curious if we should include this course in the schedule or venture elsewhere.

Disc Golf Scene would be the best place to drop a message. Mt McSauba and Wild Haven are within an hour, both fantastic substitutes if necessary.

Thanks. Just asked over there. Not really going to have enough time to travel to play the other two courses. Part of the attraction at Hickory is its proximity to the city.

Okay so here's what I know. I was up there and played it in June. They are building a new lodge and working on some of the slopes so the course has definitely taken a hit. I went up there for an A-tier and had I known the conditions of the course I wouldn't have played. That said it is no fault of the local club or the disc golf community, the city is making improvements and it is what it is.

When I was there since they had been working on the slopes and ski trails, they had taken down a lot of trees, and bulldozed some fairways. So you were basically throwing from down trees and brush, and on a couple of holes you were throwing on freshly bull dozed dirt/sand/mud. I do think that they course has been moved from what we played on for the tournament and the eventual plan is to have two 18 hole courses on the property. I'm sure once all of the construction is done and the club is able to get to work on the new layouts they will have it looking great again, but keep in mind it could be pretty rough right now.

Thanks for the heads up. There is some rain forecast this weekend. If it gets wet I may end up playing a different course after all. Don't really want to trek through construction/mud if it's sloppy out.

I don't know if you have played it but Myles Kimmerly is 20-30 minutes from Traverse City and is a super fun course. I enjoyed it way more than the chewed up version of Hickory Hills that we played. I can't wait for all of the work to be done up there though so I can get back and play it once it's back to the quality I had heard about for so long. Tons of people said Hickory used to be their favorite place to golf.

I might actually hit that one up, thanks for reminding me! I wanted to play Myles Kimmerly a couple years ago but the course was closed because of a recent tornado that did some damage. I think I mentally dismissed it as "closed" since then.

It's a super fun track in my opinion. I would certainly play it again.
