Thanks, that brought back a memory.

The first thing my Dad said during his first round was: "I could do this a lot better if I could use a baseball".

One word: Roll-aways.

(Okay, two words hyphenated).

At the time it's released from the player's hand, what shape is the object being thrown? If it's not disc shaped, it's been illegally modified.

Whatever shape it becomes afterward is irrelevant. Either the player threw a disc, or they didn't. It's a concept anyone who's made it past kindergarten should comprehend.
A hockey puck is a disc that would fly similarly to a balled up blowfly. Just because it's a disc doesn't mean it has to have frisbee like flight characteristics.

Now, it's official:

https://www.pdga.com/faq/rules/qa-equ/qa-equ-6

Quote:
QA-EQU-6: Can I take my disc, tuck the rim into itself, and throw it like a ball?

No, this is a post-production modification which alters the original flight characteristics (813.01.C.1). The disc is no longer in a round, saucer-like configuration required by the Technical Standards. Even though the modification may be temporary, it is illegal to throw the disc while in this configuration.

judging from the responses I'm seeing on reddit, there are still people that maintain the Rules Committee is misinterpreting the rules and this Q&A is wrong and they wouldn't second a call.

Lol....enforced where? I play weekly tournaments and a couple leagues. I have never seen anyone fold up their disc to throw it. If they did, I would call a violation, on stupidity alone.

If I pull out a jar of peanut butter from my bag and cover the in entire disc in peanut butter, is it illegal? Who cares, who is going to smear a disc in peanut butter. SMH.

The balled-up disc was specifically a clever way to combat super strong headwinds, separate from just messing with your cardmates. So, players aren't likely to see players try it in their area during league play unless they do encounter strong headwinds. Players who did try the balled-up disc should try to find the legal 10-meter brick disc for those headwind lay-ups/putts.

This is a Matt Bell thing. He has been doing it regularly with his Blowfly in tournaments and has never been called on it. It's actually pretty cool. Check out this video, he's the first one shown.
