It would probably be more accurate to say that someone considered Mr. Weema to be a embarrassment to what they consider 'professional' disc golf, and so they created a rule to legally keep him out.

Yes, but anyone can attempt to qualify, so it truly is open in that sense.

I agree with those who say that restricting anyone below 900 from competing, or at least competing to qualify, means that it's not truly an Open event or section anymore.

So if for the sake of argument Mr. Weema developed a 1000+ game over the off season. Would he just have to play events until and wait for his rating to increase? Or if he was putting those kind of rounds up would he be able to get some kind of waiver?

It would be based on current rating, no waiver would be granted.

However there are certainly some kinks to work out with this.

Do you have to be 900 to register? Or can I register at 895 and then if my rating is above 900 can I play? What about if I'm 901 and fall to 899 the week of the event? Surely would suck to have a plane ticket to that event and then a week out not be able to play.

That's true in Chess. Dunno if it can be said for DG players, etc.

Isnt there already a 1-2week or something grace period for updates?

Yes and no.

For pros playing amateur, there is no grace period. You have be 969 or less at the event. For example, I played MA1 at HOF this past weekend despite being a professional. I did not know if I would be eligible until the week of due to the rating change.

What you are correctly referring to is things like someone is 934 and signs up for MA2 and the week of the event their rating goes up to 936, they can still play MA2 since they signed up before the update and are in that window of time.

My post was pointing out that their needs to be clarification of which standard will apply.

My vote (if I had one), based on the the amount of travel and planning it takes to play a larger event like the ones affected, would be at the time of registration and then any fluidity wouldn't be a concern.

I'm glad most of the folks I've met playing DG don't seem to be like most of the active posters on the general discussion page here.
