Default Got a chance to throw a Vibram Ascent prototype disc yesterday...

So the guy that runs the local store near my course brought a prototype of the new Vibram Ascent disc to the course yesterday. And he let the folks at doubles throw it a few times to see what we thought.

My first impression was that I like the way it feels in my hand. It looks and feels like a fairway driver. Most of the people at the course who saw it said they were worried about how the Vibram logo on the rim would affect the flight. I think Vibram is going to have to do some PR work if they bring it to market in this form. My perspective was "There's only one way to find out how it flies."

So I threw it a few times, and I found it slower than I expected, and moderately overstable. I would describe its stability in flight as something like a Teebird, and its speed as something like a Cyclone. But it's definitely slower than a Teebird and more overstable than a Cyclone.

I did not see any turnover at all in this disc, either in my throws or in friends' throws, but the predictable fade is fairly late in its flight. At least 3/4 of the disc's flight, if I threw it hard and flat, was on a rather straight line. Unless you're a big arm, you'll probably have to put some anhyzer on it to get it past 300'. One of the other guys at the course put some moderate anhyzer on a downhill throw, and it seemed to hold a straight line for longer than my flat throws, but didn't move much to the right and still faded decidedly as it slowed. I don't know, but a really big arm might be able to dredge up a touch of understability.

The grip and release felt consistent and comfortable when throwing at full speed.

If I were to translate this disc to "Joe's Flight Chart" numbers, my first impression would be something like HSS: 0, LSS: +2, Range: 4. Until I mess around with one some more I won't comment on the power number.

I wonder how my experience compares to others' who have had the chance to throw one yet?

I didn't throw it in the water, so I'll have to take CTA's word on this.

I hope ray comments as well. I got to throw one of the first 10 produced at worlds. A firm and a Xlink. The firm for me was more noticeably understable. The XLink behaved more like a Teebird/ touch more overstable TL. The firm reminded me of an eagle. I loved the grip and feel and as it turns out this vibram logo doesn't effect the flight of the disc as much as the logo in the center (I've been told the logo on the putters slows them down at the end of the flight). I also did not feel like they could be as long as a teebird but I'm okay with that. This is their first dip into faster discs after all. The VP, Ridge, and Summit are all great discs with very clear purposes. My hope is that their drives will be processed in the same fashion. I do however hope that they disregard the arm speed information for their stabilities. Just because a Summit turns over on you doesn't mean you have an arm speed of 30 mph...

I think it would be best for Vibram to be the first company to adopt Joe's Flight chart as the standard for their discs (Steve Dodge), and hopefully others would follow suit. After all I think we can all appreciate Blake T and Dan Beto's work in creating it for us.
