They do this every year. Expired members get a 4-6 week grace period to renew before they hide all their stats.

That's not the reason. Whether a player is current or not, their rating is still "in effect". The grace period exists so those players can still know where they are eligible/not eligible to play should they have an early year tournament (perhaps where they plan to renew).
