The one thing I don't get with step putting is, why not eliminate all ambiguity? Just step to the mini and release, instead of stepping from the mini! Surely James Conrad is going to hit as many 53 footers as he does 50 footers.

You would still have ambiguity of whether or not the foot made contact with the lie before release. You really don't want to hit the ground at release or before release and break your chain. Much easier putting while about to go airborne. Conrad would still go past the marker and almost beat the putter to the basket.
