Not saying the OP's case is the same but here is an example of poles marked and unmarked.

Pole is a mando on hole #7. To protect the teepad on #16. Mando arrow and pole on map.

Pole is marked on the map between #10's basket and #9's tee. This one is there because 10's basket is blind and the pole gives a nice reference since it is visible from the teepad.

A pole is NOT present on the map in the middle of #2's fairway. The reason is the confusion about it being a mando when it was put on the map. Adding it to the map as a feature added almost no value but caused confusion.

I think in the OPs case I agree with others it helps one to differentiate between long and short Teepad.

Pole makes sense. I think that I’ve seen manholes identified in a similar way before.

Most likely, but not always. I’ve seen plenty of well marked mandos, and a few that are less marked than a dot on a map.
