Being a former champion is the only criteria necessary.

Absolutely, but those spots are limited and I think placing an arbitrary rating of 1000 will at least maintain some level of equity/fairness. Plus I think having that level will at least mean you're legit enough.

I think Will was 1006 or so when he won his first USDGC, which is pretty incredible

Oh really, so all former champs get auto berths? Interesting, I didn't know that. I'm ok with that, I know it wasn't always like that.

I remember 5 or so years ago back in 2013/2014 Kenny and Barry talking about how it was important for them to finish well in X tourney (to win a berth) because they really wanted to play USDGC. Mind you they were both 1030ish at the time and still playing very competitive pro level golf.

I thought then it was pretty silly that these guys were having to win berths to the event and that a rule change was necessary, glad to see that's happened.

Thanks. Beat a bunch of 1040/1030 rated players too.

Anything can happen on game day, as they say.

There was a brief stretch during the Performance edition years (2012-2015?) when spots were much more limited because they needed room for both sides. As a result, I think all spots were qualifying only except maybe the top 5 or 10 from the previous year. Once they got rid of the performance side, they re-instated a lot of automatic invites that had been in place prior to 2011. That includes former champions and the reigning female major champs (Worlds and USWDGC) among others.

I respect your opinion, but I disagree 100%.

Previous champions had their moment of glory already; they should be banned from the event. Pass the torch, gramps!

Same goes for anyone with a 1000+ rating. What are they trying to prove with those big fancy ratings, anyway? The event would be much better without that type of showboating. Ban them!

I'd support more of these common sense rules, too. As many as it takes for Lloyd Weema to earn a qualifying spot.

I don’t think former Champs should get the auto invite. Limit that to the past 5 years. After that earn your way.

I don't think its that big a deal. Most of the USDGC champions could qualify pretty easily if they tried. There are plenty of qualifiers to choose from and all of them except Climo and Doss, are still "touring" at least somewhat regularly.
