Uh... they were ... convicted. That's the word I would use.

If they say (via their own plea) that they are guilty, then I don't see a difference between *legally and *actually.

You guys, though, seem to be equating "not guilty" and "innocent." I DON'T.

I see someone who puts far too much faith in our legal system.

Not really. I just understand its design. While it is definitely true that mistakes are occasionally made and people who are not guilty of a crime they are charged with are sometimes convicted, the system in its design is made so that there are far far many more people who are guilty of the crime they are charged with who get not guilty verdicts or dismissals. Think about it. The system begins with burden on the prosecution tho prove guilt, a higher standard of beyond all reasonable doubt, and a requirement that law enforcement obtain usable evidence in manners specifically laid out in statute. That clearly means many many people are *actually* guilty of the crime they are charged with, than the number actually found guilty in a court of law. Way more than those found guilty who were in some people's mind "not guilty of the crime they are charged with." But even those so later found to have been either improperly prosecuted or found not guilty and have convictions overturned, they are in nearly 100% of the cases far from being an *innocent* person.
