Maybe something that cancels the "must maintain balance" part of the rule inside the circle as long as only your cane is past the marker. Then again I believe in playing by the "spirit" of a rule more than the "letter" of a rule. I can tell the difference between someone using a cane to keep from falling over and someone who is obviously trying to circumvent the rules.
Or you could request that the cane be considered a supporting point (which it really is) so that the player can put his cane behind the marker when he putts. I presuming the cane would be the closest supporting point to the pin. That way he is not breaking the no supporting point in front of your lie rule.

Just like a shoe, any cane, crutch, glove, brace, wheelchair, prosthetic leg, knee scooter, Li'l Rascal, or tank - they are all deemed to be part of the player's body.

The same rule applies to everyone.
