Jump Putt

I play with a guy that leaps over his lie as he throws his putt. It gives him at least six inches to a foot of distance to his putts. The question I and my fellow players have is, is this legal? No one else we play with does this and it seems to give him an advantage.

You have to release the disc before your foot leaves the ground, and that foot has to be on the line of play within 30cm of your lie. Jump putts are legal if done correctly, but if he's throwing while in the air it's not legal.

Jump putt are only legal outside 30m. Inside 30m you must putt from behind your lie and not cross the line. You must also demonstrate balance before crossing the line.

So why jump if you must throw while you foot is on the ground? Seems like he's all wrong, but just what is a true jump putt then?

Supposedly illegal inside 10m / 30 ft. if well marked or you want to measure to be sure start an argument if it was in or out..... I've always putted as if it was illegal everywhere.

The jumping motion can give added distance, it's not really about the jump itself. It is somewhat like an extreme follow through.

A true jump putt, as Ovar said, has to be outside of 10m. The jumping allows you to use your same putting motion over a longer distance by exaggerating the weight shift. You release the disc just as you're jumping forward right before your foot leaves the ground.

Careful, 10m is almost 33ft, not just 30ft, common misconception.
