Default Crazy flight.. Is turbulence a thing with disc golf discs?!

So it was pretty windy today with big gusts 20+mph.. Wind was swirling in this area off a tee where my drive flew great for about 100' then dropped out of the air and slammed to the ground.

I was playing with my long time DG buddy and we both looked at eachother in amazement. This was a good shot (initially) which ive thrown probably a few hundred times now on this same hole.

Any ideas what would cause a 11 speed driver to drop out of the air at 350-400' of power? Wind was left to right mostly but changed from tail to headwind also being adjacent to a hillside where wind was blowing down/thru.

It was crazy. Not a cut roll or anything just straight thrown to the ground flat.

I've watched discs rise and fall 30 or more feet on throws into a tailwind before... sometimes rising and falling on the same throw. Your disc probably hit a pocket of air underneath it that was moving faster than the air above (and probably in the same direction as the disc was going, and the drop in air pressure caused your disc to lose buoyancy and drop to the ground.

Nah … disc got sucked into a vortex spinning the opposite direction of the disc.

Not enough Gyro™ = Crash and burn, baby.

Yeah ive seen some odd bounces before but it was just so strange to see a perfectly flying disc at decent height come to an abrupt stop. Makes sense but in all of these years neither of us have seen something quite like this.

It dropped so quick and steep but flat landing.

I suspect that it hit a pocket of air that was a tailwind moving faster than the disc it self which caused the disc to simply fall.
