Default Updating Finland

If anyone's bored over the holiday week and wants to contribute to the greatness of this site and earn a few DGCR achievements...

The Finnish disc golf directory (link below) currently lists 706 courses. DGCR 'only' has 620 as of now.

Finnish directory

What I've done for Germany & Estonia is compare the map to the Browse Map on DGCR and see if there's something missing and add it. I've started doing Finland but there's still 80ish that I'm missing. It's a lot for one person.

Happy Holidays!!

Finding the missing ones is half the battle. It helps to have two monitors (or a computer and tablet/cell) so you can compare the DGCR map to the Finnish directory map.

According to this archived thread Finland had only 118 listed in 2012:
https://www.dgcoursereview.com/forum...p/t-52011.html

How many did Finland have listed before you started updating the country?
I gotta imagine that that 118 in 2012 is way off, how far off was it now?

I was able to scrape a list of course names from that page. I don't know if the names match DGCR's names but it might help?

I added something like 200 courses this time last year (mostly Finland). Another 40-50 this year. Finland disc golf has been exploding the past few years. It's seen incredible growth.

I just wish there was more representation from Finland on course reviews on this site. I would bet big money that there are some courses there that would rank in the top 20 worldwide and they are basically unknown outside of the Finnish community.

I would be cool for sure, but what would really be the actual benefit? Would more US players get on a plane to play them?

The Finnish directory is fine for finding them and rating them. Also many visitors get onto a group on Facebook for some hive mind suggestions for itineraties. Frisbeegolf Suomi is the largest group by far.

My daughter and I have been talking about doing a Finland/Sweden trip for a while, ever since we found out that our family heritage is much more Scandinavian than we thought.

Theoretically if we were to do a trip to see some of the sites and play some top courses, what would you recommend? Really considering it for 2020/21.

Also since she’s in school times of the year are more limited, but what times are best?

The Tampere Disc Golf Center is a true 5-star course with only five listed players here on the site. I played 10 Finnish courses and I wouldn't give any of them less than a 3.0. Most were a 3.5 or 4.0 in my mind -- an amazing concentration of quality golf.

Season really starts in May. Ends sometime late September/October. But june/july/aug is just an awesome time in Finland, DG or no DG.

If you start in Helsinki, there is so much good DG around. Especially if you make it like a triangle between Helsinki, Turku and Tampere (3 largest cities anyway). Perhaps to Lahti too. None of which are more than 90mins drive. Of the top 5 rated courses in the Finnish directory only Puijo and Pikkarala are away from this triangle.

I could type up a longer post later but my top 5 must play courses in the area would be Kaatis (Jδrva of Finland, really but just more epic), Lauste (best free to play IMO), Tampere (especially as it starts to wear in now and not so fresh/rough anymore) Kippasuo (amazing woods/open course close to Lahti) and my home course Keinukallio obviously where par is unofficially 1000 rated. If you drew up a route connecting these you could handpick several 4-5 star courses along the way. Maybe 3-4 days full of disc golf, ~3-4 full length or more courses per day. And thats taking the cream of the crop only. Add in the next echelon and the smorgasbord is overflowing already.
