I posted my question 5 months ago, but I won't actually be working on the field until the snow is gone. It sounds like multiple mowings is the way to go.

In the long run, yes.

When we started on Stoney Hill 11 years ago, it was a tangle of debris, briars, and saplings. We mowed some of the fairways and left the rest to grow up, and now those fairways are grassy and the rough is brutal. We only spot-sprayed, and didn't seed anything (except around the pond we built in 2009, and that didn't go so well anyway).

Repeated mowing means the woody plants just get discouraged, and some sort of grass will eventually decide it likes the habitat you've created.

You just have to keep mowing it. The weeds will try to grow up fast, so just mow them down every chance you get. The grass will eventually get a chance to fill in all the way. We've had to do it here, it just takes a while. After getting it down a few time with the dr, go over it with a riding mower or regular push mower. That'll cut it down cleanly and help it out.
