Default MA3 or MA2

I just started playing in August 2018 but have been playing pretty consistently and trying to improve. Just played in a sanctioned league and took 1st in MA3 with +6 on 24 hole round. Im registered for an upcoming tournament and my friend says I should be playing MA2. This will be my first tournament. My drives have slowly been pushing out further. Recently hit about 375 max drive with a lucid air trespass. However I cant do that consistently and up until recently it had been 300-325 most of the time. Should I be changing to MA2 for my first tournament?

I would stick with MA3 for now and probably for your first few events until you get some tournament experience. You'll know when it's time to move up when you start hearing guys muttering 'bagger' after each round.

If you really are undecided try asking the TD.

I thought I had seen some guidelines somewhere based off of maximum throwing distance and average scores or something that helped determine which division a person should probably be playing in but Ill be darned if I can find it.

Oops it was too late at night. I meant August 2019 not 2018.
Thanks guys, I didn’t want to be a bagger. I guess it’s all about having fun anyway and it’s my first tournament.

If the round you played was sanctioned, you should have received a rating. If that rating was below 900, play MA3. If it was over 900, play MA2.

If you are not a PDGA member, and didn't get a rating, just look at another player in the same round who shot a +6 and see what rating he got.

I just got my PDGA number and this was my first sanctioned event. My round rating was 887. So I guess I was barely under 900.

Play MA3 for this event. Its a good place to learn tournament etiquette and rules. Dont flip your disc, no gimmies , no falling putts, ect Read the rule book prior to the event. Be familiar but also realize your competitors are in the same boat as you. Use the event to learn the rules but dont be a rules nazi.

Then I would play MA3 for your first tournament. After that, you will have a better feel for where you stand.
