Regarding the molding, the two plastics share both a mechanical and chemical bond. This means that they don't come apart, by wear or even if you try and separate them by any means. The bottom line is that you are curious and the only way to know is to throw. Sponsored Links

They have done so successfully and have created three companies to fit their customers. MVP the main line with the sciencely names and classic black rims, Axiom more colorful names and discs, and streamline their single Shot mold company. Ive never had one of their discs come apart or heard of it happening, thats not really a concern at all.

Common myth -- MVP overmolds are two plastics (with the other one being rubber). This is wrong. Both plastics are the same because they need to bond to each other, they wouldn't if they weren't. 2nd, the overmold plastic is heavier because they add more coloring agent too it. The more color they add to it, the heavier it is.
Science -- with the inner core a less dense plastic than the rim, then the disc will theoretically fly straighter for longer and have more of a forward fade than a dump. That being said, the discs need to be brought of to speed to engage this. Does it really make a difference, there was a scientist a few years back that determined that Gyro molds should theoretically fly about 10-15% further all things being equal in terms of throwing. Does this really hold up in the wild? Perhaps but much harder to determine. Consistency -- the reason I originally fell for MVP and overmolds was the sheer lack of consistency with other companies. While I think that over the years, MVP has slowly becoming less consistent then they use to be, they sure are better than most companies. That being said, Fission plastic (while great when it fits your throwing style) is the least consistent of the plastics and Plasma is generally the most consistent (Neutron use to be util they started using softer Neutron blends as their base. Originally Neutron was pretty firm and took forever to beat in). Flight -- MVP discs take a while to really beat in so you have a long time of a consistent flight. Besides Fission, I still have some old Neutron discs that still fly how they did nearly 5 years ago and they have been in my bag that long. Older MVP wears like iron. And that is what I like. I don't have to worry about a tree kick or a hard landing affecting my disc. Sure they will take dings and scratches, but they really last. MVP is slowly getting more recognition. But in the end, it really is just plastic. There is no magic disc or brand of discs. I have stuck with MVP for the above reasons, but whatever gives you confidence on the course is what you should be throwing.

Otherwise, you nailed it perfectly. Excellent synopsis, and pretty much nails why I throw exclusively MVP/axiom |

Something to do with covalent bonds, I dunno, didn’t do great in chemistry.

Just received a Neutron plastic disc, haven't bought a new MVP for quite a while. I really like how it feels but just wondering if the blend has changed a bit, as held up to light it's almost slightly translucent and I can see the dye swirls? Compared to fully opaque like Star for example.
I think it looks cool but I was just wondering if that has changed over time or if it's just a run to run thing? |

Picked up a superflat Proton Matrix @ 176g in that horrible clear/blue color because if the great mid purge of late '19. I'm pretty shocked at how nice and Buzzish it flies, nothing like the glideless N Matrix I threw early in the season. Are there a lot of Buzz-flat Proton Matrices out there?
