Judging a course by one picture is a great idea

Screw the pix.
From a veritable wedding band of reviewers:
Swatso: Wonderful Terrain + Great Design = Fantastic Course
bjreagh: Harmon Hills is amazing setting for disc golf on private hilly east TN farmland.
Bennybennybenny: Harmon Hills is pretty much everything you could ever want in disc golf
BigAl724: Harmon Hills is a premiere disc golf destination and certainly deserves the hype it receives on here.
Blake833: This is one of the most unique courses I've ever played,
BogeyNoMore: A destination course, without doubt. If you like disc golf, Harmon will put a smile on your face.
BrotherDave: There are no bad holes here. There aren't even average holes here. The worst hole you'll find is simply good, well-thought out design.

I could go on... but you get the point.

i read some of the reviews

is it a backyard rustic type feel

the course looks like its on rolling hills with moderate woods but it seems like its very open with clusters of trees

the holes just seem to blend in together and nothing looks remarkable

it looks solid but top 10 solid has me questioning

it all seems very run of the mill

Perhaps that's the difference in playing the course on your computer screen, and playing it in person.

Your comment is a lot like someone saying they don't think a certain movie is Oscar worthy based solely on the trailers... without ever having seen the movie. I provided what I thought was decent case, citing specific comments from several experienced reviewers.

You're perfectly entitled to not play it, but that would be your loss, not mine.

Fair enough...I feel the same way about the Selah courses.

Ok, after looking at the pictures,I have to agree with you. When you take pictures of a disc golf course in December and fill up the media section, you are seeing it at it's very worst...

Part of HH's fame is due to being so good long before there were so many courses of similar caliber. Some top 10 courses (Selah and HH are the ones I've played which apply...) are in the top 10 not just because of what they are, but because of WHEN they became what they are. Recent HH reviews are a little lighter on the 5.0 ratings than in previous years, and I think that's more reflective of the improvement of DG course quality overall than it is an indictment on Harmon Hills.

If you play Harmon Hills and don't like it, then you either played on a terrible day or have very different disc golf preferences than I do. But I can definitely think of courses rated lower that I think are better. Nevertheless, Harmon Hills deserves it's spot in the top 10, imho, simply due to how good it's been for how long. And when I played in Fall 2019, the HH magic was still alive and well though the course has aged some and doesn't have the active upkeep that many courses enjoy.

Does one of our math people want to figure out a way to calculate "cumulative rating?" Harmon Hills and both Selah courses would be an example of a high Area under the Curve if you plotted rating against years.

The factors that get you into the top are;1) reputation of the designer2) amenities 3) actual layout and 4)amount of exposure. When courses like Harmon Hills and Hawk Hollow do crack the top 10 on the strength of the layout, that's a course built to last.
Staying in the top ten is all about avoiding confrontation...
