Default Help running a tournament

Since I'm now the president of the disc golf club at my University, I am putting together a fundraiser tournament. This is my first time directing a tournament and I'm looking for any imput.

E.G.
How much to pay out?
How to get the word out?
How to get sponsors?

Anything.

The PDGA website has a ton of resources on this.

One thing that will be most helpful is checklists for things to do well in advance, a short time in advance, the morning of the tournament, etc. (Some of it involves sanctioning and can be ignored).

It includes payout tables. You're not obligated to use them but, if you do, you'll more-or-less meet player expectations.

Getting the word out? Signs on the course, of course. Discussion boards. Events calendars, on this website and local or state sites, if you have them. Mail flyers to those you know. We send flyers to people we know involved with courses within 100 miles or so, asking them to post them on their bulletin boards; some post them on their websites as well.

Basically what David said....

I helped TD a B-tier event and basically we gave the flyers to everyone we knew, when we went to the course to clean up talked to the guys playing, our attendance was the highest it had ever been (12th annual event) BE ORGANIZED!! I can NOT stress that enough

-have registration sheets out in advanced
-Make an assembly line type for registration, Division/Ace pot/CTP/register
-Payout is whatever is left over after cost deducted, if you have trophies, they come out of registration, if you have any other fees that you did not get from sponsorship, it comes out of registration
-PDGA expects I THINK 80% payout to everyone
-To get sponsorship (honestly this was the tough part FOR ME, I was unprepared getting sponsorships, have a list of what there money will go towards, how it will benefit there business, and who to contact on a paper)

Thats all im gonna help with right now, but im sure it will be a big learning experience so just have fun!

Make sure your upfront about it being a fundraiser tournament. List what may be done with the funds. IE: "Come to Disc Golfers Anonymous tournament help us fund new tee pads for our course." Players will want to help if they know what they'll get in return.

I have one more question: If it's not a sanctioned tournament, can non pros be payed in cash?

i played in a club tourney that was not sanctioned and they paid ams out in cash rather than credit. I don't think it's a problem.

Don't forget additional things to buy in for if it's a fundraiser. Mulligans that double as raffle tickets work really well.

Yes.

I mentioned the "expected" payouts in the PDGA tables, but if it's a fundraiser you'll probably alter this. As someone said, you need to make it clear in advance.

Paying Ams in cash certainly simplifies things. On the other hand, if you're able to obtain discs at wholesale price, understand that the difference between wholesale and retail price for Am prizes is where tournaments make their money....and where funds for the fundraiser can be earned, too.
