Default Positive Disc Golf Media

Whether you're starting a new club in your hometown or proposing a brand new course to your Parks board, you're going to need to persuade others that disc golf is a good idea worthy of their time and money. This thread is collection of positive disc golf media to help you succeed.

Information like the most recent growth statistics, examples of disc golfers or clubs are giving back to their communities, photos of cleanup efforts, etc. is a great place to start, and I'm excited to see what all we can collect here to promote the growth of our sport.

Please post a summary of your information, as well as links and, where appropriate, useful quotes.

Research, post, and check here for support before going to your local government leaders!

Here's an article from Appalachian Voices that discusses a hiking/disc golf program for younger kids to pull them away from tv screens and monitors and outside. They actually help build trails and get rewards.

Quote:
"It’s no secret that kids are now spending more time indoors. A Kaiser Family Foundation study published in 2010 showed that children ages 8 to 18 spend an average of 7 hours and 38 minutes using entertainment media in a typical day."

LaSalle News Tribune out of northern Illinois has this article about a pro disc golfer going to worlds and raising money for the American Cancer Society with every stroke he took. Not a bad idea. This could be a way to benefit or fund any cause--a fellow player needing medical care, charity, or simply a new course idea.

"Discs for Charity" by Chris Yucus. LaSalle News Tribune. 8/7/2012.

Awesome: Disc golfers save jogger's life during tournament play. That's what I'm talking about!

An boy earns Eagle Scout honors by installing concrete tee pads and benches at local disc golf course.

We had an Eagle hopeful help build stairs at two places at one of our soon-to-be-courses in NC. This is a great way to get projects done around a course.

It would also be useful if people could find incidents of Disc Golfers improving the land and cleaning up parks. DGers saving lives is awesome but it's a stretch to use it in a pitch, whereas showing past evidence of DGers clearing invasive species and picking up trash lends itself to the cause well.

Edit - Kinda like the post right above this one =)

Yeah, I mentioned "photos of cleanup efforts" in the thread description, post #1. I hope we can find some great before/after shots or take some ourselves! Any kind of positive press is welcome, though; you never know what's going to strike a chord with people.

There are many communities that see a decline in vagrants and shady people of a different orientation at thier local park after installing a disc golf course.
This happened shortly after the course was installed at the Radcliff City Park.
