9 holes of disc golf plus carts 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 28, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a 9 hole disc golf course installed on a full size 9 hole ball golf course. However, the 9 disc golf course only takes up four holes of this sprawling ball golf course. This makes the course compact enough to walk. There are water hazards on most holes. There is plenty of room for 9 more disc golf holes!

I used bullet points for those that don't want to read the whole thing.

This is a big course. It may only be 9 holes, but these are 9 disc golf holes on a sprawling ball golf course. They didn't have a map and I didn't measure. Hole 1 of the Ball golf hosts Holes 1 and 2. It is 409 yards/1220 feet. NOT a pitch and putt, bring the rollers and the big drivers. I posted the regular course map with my estimations of locations of tees and pins. Bring your longest drivers and don't forget your roller discs!

Water Hazards
That means you can lose plastic, so be prepared. The water hazards are properly placed either near the tee or near the green. Water could come into play for players on Holes 3,4,5,6,8 and 9. Players that can throw at least 250 feet with accuracy won't have any problems with the water. I am a weeny arm and I could easily navigate the water hazards. The beginners with me did OK as well.

Challenge is at the pin
Like most wide open ball golf courses without many trees, the challenge lies near the target and with the OB. Many targets are on the edge of the OB greens, cart paths and sand traps. Several targets are perched on hills and slopes. Targets 4 and 9 are close to the water hazards. Windy conditions would increase the challenge. Of course beginners don't have to play the greens, paths and pins OB.

Pay to Play during season?
The round cost $5.00 per person and the cart cost $5.00 each.. However, I can't really be sure because the lady behind the counter didn't really know. I paid $25.00 for two carts and three people. The pro shop closes in June. However, I don't think they pull the targets because the course is listed as permanent. I would think it is free to play in the summer if you walk.

Carts are excellent
I certainly wouldn't play this course in the heat without the electric golf carts. It might be fine to walk in the morning or in the winter, but the course is very exposed with very little shade. The rental carts have built in shade.

Location, Location, Location
Well, this course doesn't have that. However, it is a small oasis in the middle of nowhere. It is at least a half hour drive from Chandler or Gilbert. I thought it was worth the drive from Tempe. This isn't a little pitch and putt, it is a great big 9 hole course, with room for at least 9 more.

Family Friendly
Great for the whole family. Especially because the carts make it fun and easy for your non-playing partner or kids to tag along. My adult daughter can't wait to go back with her boyfriend as a caddy/cart driver, not as a player.

Pro Shop
They have discs for rent in the pro shop in case you don't have your own. The shelves and refrigerators were empty because it was the last weekend they were open, so I have no clue if they normally have discs and such. I am pretty sure they sell beer because they advertised "beer and burger night". Since they had no drinks or snacks, the lady said it was fine for us to bring along an ice chest of own beverages!

Bring Sun Screen
This is a wide open course without a lot of shade. Be prepared for full exposure.

Restrooms
There were full service restrooms inside the Rec Center/Pro Shop. I don't recall any other facilities.

Cons:

Location
Location is not optimal. I personally thought it was worth the trip from Tempe. But, I like to bag courses and don't mind driving to add another to my played list.

Room for 9 more
They have plenty of room to host a full 18 hole course here. Probably 2-18 holes course. I think if they added 9 more holes, more folks would make the trip.

Variety
Ball golf setting means there isn't a wide shot variety. However, they do make use of the limited elevation and water hazards for more challenge.

Lost Discs
Possibility of losing discs in the water might be a con for some, but just cautionary for me. It might also be possible for beginners to go over the fence into some back yards. It would be tough to go over a fence, but I have seen what newbs can do!

Other Thoughts:

Rating

Compared to most of the 9 hole courses I have played, this is top notch. It is not your typical 9 hole community recreation course. This is a real life disc golf course with real challenges. I think an average 9 hole neighborhood course should get a 2.5 to 3 and this is worlds above that. However, I don't want to give anyone the wrong impression by rating it 4. It is fun and unique and like I said, worlds above the average 9 hole pitch and putt courses I have played. If I could I would rate it 3.75!
