Everything you want in a 9 Hole 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 17, 2019 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

A couple open holes, a couple wooded holes, and a couple technical holes. Its a great 9 hole course.

Cons:

Water hazard that loses every disc. Could be an 18 hole course if it was redesigned.

Other Thoughts:

I think that the course is geared toward people that want to better their skills with accuracy, and distance driving.

Pros:

Big parking lot with a sign pointing you over the bridge to the disc golf course. Amazing tee signs maybe even the best I've ever seen on a disc golf course. Very descriptive with a great look. Bricks have next tee sign directions on the ground by basket. Hole 1s pin location in the barrel is awesome and iconic spot. Multiple pin locations and some our elevated and very cool. The real short holes still have a difficult line giving them some challenge and not guarantee birdies. Spinners marking pin placement most you can see from tee pad anyways. Mix of open holes for first 4 holes then tight wooded lines for next 3 then back to open somewhat. Tight lines help sharpen your mid range game. Good use of mini elevation.

Cons:

Layout can be a little tricky after one go right of pin and follow path. 4 and 5 play in the same direction right by each other play 4 then walk back to 5s pad. Some drunk people were sleeping around one of the teepads, hopefully just was a that day thing and not often. Can get muddy on holes 2 and 3 and there fairways play close together.

Other Thoughts:

Overall a fun course and a course you can bring new players to and still have fun yourself

Hillcrest Community Park Was Very Foggy! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 27, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Hillcrest DGC just opened in 2017 and from the reviews I read, it appears that there is a club presence here constantly improving things. The morning I played it was so foggy you couldn't see the baskets 200' away. It made for an interesting round. Wandering around in the fog was a local nutcase, Captain Coconut, screaming at the top of his lungs about alleged conspiracy theories.

The course has good amenities, nice concrete tee pads, a practice basket, a small kiosk, and small tee signs. There are two basket positions which are indicated by a small spinner device on the signs.

The course is set in three different sections of the park. # 1 starts in the first section, then you follow the trail to get to # 2. I was a little confused through this part.

4-5-6-7 all played through the wooded area. I liked # 6 very much. It is just 138' in the A position but very tight and technical. Then the basket is set in a very cool position, behind four trees spread out and an evergreen bush about waist height.

I liked # 7 a lot, too. It play 229' slightly up and a slight hyser. There is a large forked tree which would tempt many players to throw through. The basket is then set right on the edge of this restraining wall. And it's a pretty hole, as well.

# 8 plays to a basket 250' which sits in a circle of five large concrete circles painted blue. Are these from an ancient civilization? Or the remains of a long ago forgotten tetherball mecca? I do think it might be fun to call them OB when playing with friends.

# 9 plays back 267' with an ugly creek on your right.

Cons:

The early navigation was a little tricky but it might have just been my disorientation caused by the thick fog.

Grass was tall and very wet.

Creek bordering 4 and 9 is nasty.

No place for big arms to air it out.

Other Thoughts:

The locals have apparently improved this course quite a bit. It's a nice recreational experience with contrasting holes between the more open parts and the tight technical wooded area. I enjoyed the wooded area with some really clever basket placements and the tight, technical lines you need to hit. Hillcrest is a very solid, rec course and one that I'd be happy to play in on a regular basis.

Potential 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 13, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

-New baskets, concrete tees
-Varied terrain, some interesting features come into play
-Little chance of losing disc
-Fairly short and technical - favors accuracy vs. distance
-Easy to navigate course
-Easy to find/park
-Great course for beginners

Cons:

-Few opportunnities to pull out the driver
-Holes 3-7 are in dense tree grove which has extreme little margin for error - it's a bit like disc pin ball
-No signs yet - there's a map near 1st tee so just snap a photo of that and you'll figure it out.
-Pedestrain path through middle of course could potentially be an issue on a nice weekend day (despite good signage warning walkers they are entering a disc course)

Other Thoughts:

I got out on a weekday afternoon to check this new course out so it was empty and I was able to play nine in about 30 minutes. It's still a work in progress as tee boxes are under construction and about to be poured. There's potential here for sure. The course has three sections of land with two being open park settings and one being a redwood forest. While I'm sure the designers had to negotiate with the parks department on the layout, it would be great if they could find a way to get a few holes out of the forest and at least partially into the open areas so you're not dealing with blind luck shots through mutiple tree trunks on over half of the holes. In the course-starved east bay area, we'll take whatever we can get and it's great to see locals mobilizing to get some nines set up so hopefully this is the beginning of more to come here at Hillcrest or elsewhere in the region where's there's more room.

Great New Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 26, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

+ Great variety of routes on multiple pins. Works well for lefty/forehand and RHBH players.
+ Great variety of different difficulty in shots ranging from hyzers to long straight tunnels.
+ Beautiful park overall
+ Was told by a pedestrian that she's happy this course was put in because she saw shady things happening in the woods from time to time and it deterred her from wanting to walk through the park. She loves that we have such a large presence here already and drive away some of the skeevy people.
+ Signage notifying pedestrians to watch for flying discs are great!
+ Bricks to show direction of next tee pad

Cons:

Updated 7/22:
I had 4 cons listed out here that have ALL been resolved. This is a really great 9 hole course with a wide variety of play and the course lead lives nearby and changes the pin location frequently to keep it fresh.

Other Thoughts:

They have a dedicated crew working to make this park really great so I'm sure some nice pin signage is yet to come. With it, this course will be great and I will definitely update my ratings when that happens.
My wife is a lefty and this has been her favorite course so far out of the few we've played in the East Bay. She loved having all the right curving options to go to on each pin.
Great to see so many people out playing. I played 18 at busy Hillcrest and then went over to a packed Walden Park for another 9. Lots of activity in the area which is only going to help grow the sport.

Don't forget to bring a towel! Cut grass and dew on mornings will plague your discs. Bring one or two towels.

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 23, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

• Easy to find
• Pretty easy to navigate
• Nice new baskets
• Very technical course
• Restrooms onsite
• Friendly locals

Cons:

• No signs yet
• Tees are currently just cleared dirt
• A little criss-crossy from #3-#6
• Some interesting characters hanging around the area

Other Thoughts:

Tips:
• When you come into the parking lot, park wherever and head across the bridge next to the restrooms. #1 is on the right, just past the end of the bridge.
• Tees are currently marked with sticks and orange flags in the ground
• Use the map on the Facebook page and follow the orange markers when you're there

Random Thoughts:
This is obviously a VERY early review as the course is not done but I did want to drop in and give the course crew some love.

Hillcrest is a pretty unique course in the area, in that it's probably the most technical. None of the holes are long but all require thought and precision, and what's nice is that in almost every case, you have multiple lines to choose from. Now, these are not wide open lines in most cases, so you do have to hit them within a few feet to be rewarded. If you can do those things, I imagine aces and birdies are in your future. For example, we witnessed an almost ace run on #9 while we were there (banged off the basket). Now, if you miss those lines, I wouldn't call it an unrecoverable situation but you will be penalized. Trees will knock you into the whoknowswhere and there is OB mapped out in spots, although we weren't 100% clear on where it all is just yet. But if there's a local around, ask them. We found all parties to be quite friendly. Here's where I should mention that this is a mixed-use park, so do be paying attention to the non-discers as they may be oblivious to your presence. There were also some interesting folks hanging around the perimeter who looked a little, how shall I say....just be smart and aware. But outside of that, this is a cool little park with some nice views, a little pond and stream, and some other activities if you're interested (e.g. baseball and jungle gyms). Circling back to the course, you also have a nice variety of field shots on #1, #2, #8, and #9 and some foresty shots on #s 3 through #7. I'd say it's a good spot for beginners and advanced folks with the only real 'disc danger' being the creek to the right of #4.

Bottom Line:
Obviously, this is still a new/unfinished course so I'll be returning to update this review/score very soon, but definitely don't let the newness stop you from checking this course out. We thoroughly enjoyed the technical challenge that it presents and look forward to the improvements and opportunity to sharpen our games on future visits. Great job so far, course designers.
